KANSAS CITY, Mo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2002

Aquila, Inc. (NYSE: ILA) announced today that it had submitted its Certification of Financial Earnings without modification to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in accordance with the August 14 deadline. As required, the certification, signed by Robert K. Green, Aquila president and chief executive officer, and Dan Streek, chief financial officer, verifies their belief in the accuracy of Aquila's 2001 annual report on Form 10-K, proxy statement, the company's Form 10-Q for the first and second quarters of 2002 and Form 8-Ks filed during 2002 since the filing of the Form 10-K.

A copy of the certification is available from the front page of Aquila's website at www.aquila.com.

The SEC issued an order on June 27 requiring chief executive officers and chief financial officers to make sworn statements verifying that, to their knowledge, the foregoing reports contained no misleading information or misstatements of information. Aquila was among the approximately 1,000 largest U.S. publicly traded companies to receive the order.

Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Aquila operates electricity and natural gas distribution networks serving more than six million customers in seven states and in Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. The company also owns and operates power generation and mid-stream natural gas assets. At June 30, 2002, Aquila had total assets of $11.9 billion. More information is available at www.aquila.com.
