"This past year, American moviegoers sent box office totals to an all-time high. We feel it's important that those people who spent their hard-earned money to see a movie are given a voice," said Russ Leatherman, founder and famous voice of the AOL Moviefone service. "Unlike other awards, the American Moviegoer Awards enable our enormous audience of millions of moviegoers to talk back to the movie industry and recognize the films and performances that they view as the very best."
"For this year's American Moviegoer Awards, we've really expanded the program by targeting not just the Moviefone audience but the enormous combined audience of AOL members and users of the AOL and Time Inc. family of brands, " said Jay Rappaport, Senior Vice President and Group General Manager, AOL Entertainment. "This expansion makes this one of the biggest online movie polls ever and an accurate reflection of the opinions of the nation's moviegoers."
Last year, Gladiator emerged as the big winner with awards for Outstanding Film, Outstanding Director (Ridley Scott), and Outstanding Actor (Russell Crowe). Julia Roberts topped the Outstanding Female Actor category for her role in Erin Brockovich.
The American Moviegoer Awards are especially timely as we approach the most exciting annual event in Hollywood, the Academy Awards. For the first time, AOL Time Warner's online brands are combining their unique entertainment content to create a single comprehensive online package of Academy Awards coverage called "Live the Academy Awards." People can go to AOL Keyword: Live the Academy Awards, Netscape, CompuServe or Moviefone to access extensive photo galleries, news and interactive community features as well as premiere editorial content from the Web sites of Entertainment Weekly, People and InStyle. The interactive features include a message board hosted by Entertainment Weekly's Ty Burr posing a different Oscar related question each week and an interactive gossip BOT, named TattleTeller, that enables users to send and receive instant messages about the latest Oscar buzz.
