Provider of Photonic Chip(TM) Optical Sub-Assemblies Automates
With Palomar to Meet Expected Demand
Palomar Technologies, the leading manufacturer of automated high-precision assembly systems for broadband communications, announced today that Digital Optics Corp. (DOC) has selected Palomar's LDA Laser Diode Assembly Cell to automate optical component assembly.
The LDA will expand DOC's optical integration and packaging capabilities to meet volume production requirements for several strategic customers in the telecommunication industry. DOC is a worldwide leader in the development and marketing of Photonic Chips, optical sub-assemblies (OSA) that integrate optics and active components at the wafer and die level using high-speed automation for volume manufacturing.
Palomar's Laser Diode Assembly Cell (LDA) is a high-precision assembly system that fully automates complex laser diode component assembly. The LDA eliminates manual processes, precisely placing and attaching microchips to their sub-assembly, and then performing the interconnect to attach these assemblies to their packaging. The system uses a patented heat process that controls the temperature required for proper die attach. The result is high yield, with high placement accuracy. The LDA was awarded the 2001 Advanced Packaging Award by Advanced Packaging magazine.
"Automation brings the accuracy and speed that is critical to increasing yield and lowering manufacturing costs," said Bill Francis, DOC's vice president of operations. "We selected the LDA based on its superior technical capability and the proactive support of the Palomar team throughout the entire process, from product concept to production."
In addition to its high-precision assembly systems, Palomar Technologies offers expert assistance to emerging and established broadband component manufacturers for process development, prototyping and pilot production. Through assembly process development and precision metrology services, Palomar helps customers to rapidly prototype new designs and performs precision measurements on optical and high-frequency wireless devices to ensure the highest level of performance in the assembly process.
"We worked closely with Digital Optics' engineering team as the product evolved to ensure they could produce a product of the highest reliability, while meeting their volume requirements," said Kevin Kron, Palomar's manager of applications engineering. "With highly accurate, automated assembly, Digital Optics can continue to offer the lowest cost and best performance for its customers."
