SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 2002

Provides Full Complement of Market-Leading Embedded Software,

Development Tools for New Intel Communications Processors

Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected devices, today announced that it will support the latest Intel(R) XScale(TM) technology-based chips. Manufacturers building next-generation Intel XScale technology-based solutions in networking, data storage, and other target markets can leverage advanced software support from Wind River including the VxWorks(R) real-time operating system (RTOS), Tornado(R) integrated development environment (IDE), visionICE II / visionPROBE II hardware bring-up tools and hardware reference designs.

Wind River is supporting the new Intel(R) IXP2800 and IXP2400 Network Processors for carrier-class and enterprise networking equipment, Intel(R) IXP425 Network Processor for broadband networking systems and Intel(R) IOP321 I/O processor for Intelligent RAID, Internet storage and network infrastructure equipment. Through Intel and Wind River's Center of Excellence relationship, Wind River is able to quickly support the latest Intel XScale technology-based chips when they are first made available.

"Our new network and I/O processors are aimed at simplifying and accelerating the development of the latest concepts for networking and storage solutions, and this is where Wind River's software and tools make an important contribution," said Doug Davis, general manager of the Intel Network Processor Division.

"Due to our Intel Center of Excellence program, Wind River is able to provide the most comprehensive product offering for Intel XScale-based chips in the industry," said Dave Sheaffer, senior director of Wind River's Strategic Alliance group. "Many of our key networking and communications customers utilize Intel XScale-based hardware in their applications. Aligning with Intel to deliver optimized, integrated development platforms for these processors frees our customers up from having to integrate software with hardware so they can focus on differentiating their products and getting their products to market."

In addition to supporting these processors with the VxWorks RTOS, Tornado IDE, embedded networking stacks and hardware bring-up tools, Wind River will additionally provide hardware reference designs to support specific processors, as indicated in the following market-specific sections.

Next-Generation Network Processor Support

Today's network computing environment has forced network solutions providers to meet user demand for new products supporting multiple services within tight time-to-market deadlines. Wind River's solutions for the new Intel IXP2800 and IXP2400 Network Processors enable the development of full-featured network infrastructure equipment ranging from multi-service switches, broadband access platforms, Web switches and network appliances, to systems designed for Layer 2/3 forwarding and virtual private networks (VPNs). Wind River offers a complete array of embedded network stacks to support these network processors including WindNet(TM) remote access and routing protocols, MPLS, ATM and VoIP signaling. Wind River can further complement these stacks with sophisticated network management and network security technologies.

I/O Processing Solutions

Wind River software support for the Intel IOP321 I/O processor chipset enables rapid development for this second generation I/O processor. I/O processors are popular in Intelligent RAID applications, Internet storage applications (SCSI, Fibre Channel, SAN), networking (LAN, ATM, Ethernet, Switches, Routers) and other applications that require high-performance I/O subsystems. Developers can benefit from the Intel IOP321 chipset's increased I/O system performance alongside Wind River's storage networking solution, Tornado for Intelligent Network Acceleration (TINA). TINA accelerates the TCP/IP processing of a system by offloading the TCP/IP stack to dedicated embedded processors, and is based on Intel XScale technology. A hardware reference design for the IOP321 I/O processors will also be offered.

Enabling Broadband Networking Solutions

The Intel IXP425 network processor targets builders of new broadband technologies, as required by increasing demand for Internet access, home office portals and telecommuting. In addition to VxWorks RTOS and Tornado IDE support, an IXP425-based hardware reference design will be provided, enabling hardware and software development before customers' own hardware is available.

Availability

Wind River's VxWorks RTOS, Tornado IDE, embedded networking stacks and hardware bring-up tools for the Intel IOP321 I/O processor chipset are available immediately for beta customers with general shipments expected in the second half of 2002. TINA will be available for beta customers in March 2002 with general shipments expected in the summer of 2002. The development platform for Intel's new network processor family (including the IXP425) will be made available to beta customers in the second half of 2002 with general delivery expected by the end of year. Wind River is a member of the Intel(R) Internet Exchange Architecture (IXA) Developer Network, ensuring compliance and interoperability of Wind River / Intel IXA products upon their delivery.
