SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 28, 2002
XtremeSpectrum Inc., a privately held company dedicated to bringing ultra-wideband products to the wireless industry, today announced that its ultra-wideband technology has been named "Best Wireless Technology" by Wireless Systems Design magazine. The awards were presented in a ceremony yesterday here, at the Wireless Systems Design Conference & Expo 2002, held at the San Jose Convention Center. The Wireless Systems Design 2002 Industry Awards are given out annually as a means of honoring those wireless products/technology developments that stand apart from the competitive field.
Receiving the award for XtremeSpectrum, Chris Fisher, vice president of marketing, commented, "We are thrilled that Wireless Systems Design has honored our ultra-wideband technology. Having just received FCC approval for ultra-wideband, we believe this is the most significant commercial wireless technology of the decade. Ultra-wideband's unique ability to simultaneously deliver data rates in excess of 100 megabits per second at low levels of power consumption and consumer price points will enable true home networking. This award honors the years of engineering effort that was required to create the industry's first `Moore's Law Radio,' which essentially yields a wireless solution that scales in direct proportion to the underlying semiconductor process technology."
About XtremeSpectrum's Ultra-wideband Technology
Ultra-wideband is a wireless technology that transmits an extremely low power signal over a wide swath of radio spectrum. Unlike conventional radio systems that operate within a relatively narrow bandwidth, i.e. Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11a, ultra-wideband operates across a wide range of frequency spectrum by transmitting a series of very narrow and low power pulses. The combination of broader spectrum, lower power and pulsed data means that ultra-wideband causes less interference than conventional narrowband radio solutions, and delivers wire-like performance in an indoor wireless environment. This makes ultra-wideband technology ideal for consumer electronics applications that are increasingly multimedia-rich in content.
By mid-2002, XtremeSpectrum plans to deliver the first "Moore's Law radio"--a wireless chipset that scales performance in direct proportion to improvements in semiconductor process technology with no need for enhancements to the basic system architecture--for home networking applications such as set-top boxes, digital still and video cameras, MP3 audio players, home theater equipment, video gaming equipment, PDAs, etc.
Ultra-wideband Approval
On February 14, the Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously to approve rules for the unlicensed use of ultra-wideband. The FCC, working together with the Department of Commerce (DoC) and the National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA), compiled a technically detailed and comprehensive record spanning over three and half years and 900 public filings, with particular focus on the safety and interference issues associated with the unlicensed operation of ultra-wideband. XtremeSpectrum, working closely with the FCC, NTIA, DoC, Department of Transportation and Department of Defense, had been joined by leading consumer electronics, semiconductor and communication equipment companies, such as Cisco, Intel, Motorola, Sony Electronics, Sharp, Siemens and Texas Instruments, in filing letters of industry support for ultra-wideband with the FCC.
