WHAT:        The migration season of the California Gray Whales is
             underway. In honor of this annual wonder of nature, the
             Birch Aquarium at Scripps will host a beach clean-up and
             an afternoon of painting with one of the world's most
             recognizable friends of the whales -- environmental
             artist Wyland.

WHO:         Organizations scheduled to participate in the beach
             clean-up include "I Love a Clean San Diego," the Birch
             Aquarium, the Wyland Foundation, and the San Diego YMCA.

WHERE:       La Jolla Shores Beach. Public parking is available in the
             lot adjacent to the beach.

WHEN:        Saturday, Feb. 9, 8-10 a.m. For details, call Birch
             Aquarium at 858/534-FISH.

BACKGROUND:  Families and all ages are encouraged to participate.
             Check in at any of the main event stations when you
             arrive, no reservations are being taken. Bags, gloves,
             and special discounts to the Birch Aquarium will be
             provided to all participants. Wyland will also make a
             special appearance at this event. Later, from noon to 2
             p.m., the artist will paint a life-sized ocean life mural
             with children at the Birch Aquarium, 2300 Expedition Way,
             La Jolla, Calif. Live music, face painting, balloon
             artists, and educational marine art activities will be
             held.

The Wyland Foundation is a non-profit 501(c) (3) publicly supported organization committed to developing and supporting educational programs for youth, funding art and science research scholarships for less privileged children, and creating life-sized monumental art in public places to create ocean awareness.
