BILLERICA, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 2002

SilverStream Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSSW) today announced that the SilverStream eXtend(TM) product suite has achieved Java(TM) 2 platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE(TM)) compatibility, passing the Compatibility Test Suite for version 1.3. J2EE 1.3 compatibility reinforces SilverStream's commitment to providing customers with highly productive, standards-based products for developing and deploying advanced Web applications that are portable and cross-platform compatible with market-leading J2EE application servers. The company also announced today an early access program for its J2EE 1.3 compatible products; for more information please visit: http://www.silverstream.com/products.> In addition to achieving J2EE 1.3 compatibility for the SilverStream eXtend Application Server, the layered products that comprise the SilverStream eXtend product suite have also been branded J2EE 1.3 compatible. SilverStream eXtend also includes SilverStream eXtend Composer, SilverStream eXtend Director and the SilverStream eXtend Workbench. SilverStream eXtend consists of four fully integrated components that can stand alone or be used together as a comprehensive and highly productive J2EE-compatible Web services solution:

-- SilverStream eXtend Composer leverages XML to integrate existing enterprise systems into powerful Web services that can be flexibly leveraged in sophisticated business applications.

-- SilverStream eXtend Director provides a flexible application development and deployment platform that consumes Web services and delivers relevant experiences to any user on any device.

-- SilverStream eXtend Workbench is a comprehensive environment that makes it easier to develop and deploy portable, standards-based applications using wizards, visual designers, archive-based projects and automatic deployment to leading J2EE application servers.

-- SilverStream eXtend runs on market-leading J2EE application servers such as IBM WebSphere, BEA WebLogic and, of course, the SilverStream eXtend Application Server to provide the necessary infrastructure for enterprise applications.

"J2EE 1.3 compatibility represents a significant milestone for SilverStream and customers will benefit from our ongoing commitment to providing the most open and integrated environment that delivers on the promises of J2EE," said David Litwack, president and CEO of SilverStream. "Rather than lock customers into proprietary technologies that limit the potential use of advanced business applications, we have built a suite of products that is not only interoperable with other J2EE-compatible servers, but is now certified under the same standards upon which those platforms were built."

In addition to compatibility with the latest release of J2EE 1.3, SilverStream eXtend also offers comprehensive support for the latest Web services standards. The SilverStream eXtend product suite features a WSDL Editor that simplifies the creation of Web service descriptions from scratch and also ships with a high performance SOAP engine and UDDI registry. SilverStream eXtend also runs on leading J2EE application servers, including the SilverStream eXtend Application Server, making it the most comprehensive product line for J2EE and Web services-based applications.

"SilverStream has taken an important step in advancing the evolution of J2EE technology by moving beyond the application server layer and building a suite of products that truly epitomize the portability and interoperability that these standards are designed to facilitate," said Ralph Galantine, product marketing line manager, J2EE, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Licensees like SilverStream are taking the lead in building on the J2EE roadmap to provide truly open development environments and are critical to the adoption and advancement of the J2EE standard."

SilverStream has been an active and visible advocate of Java technology-based standards since its inception, most recently working along with Sun and 14 other companies on new specifications contained in the J2EE 1.3 release. In addition, SilverStream was one of the first vendors to offer a Java-based application server and J2EE-based products above the application server. SilverStream has a long-standing tradition of contributing to the evolution of proposed standards, and implementing them as they are finalized.
