PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 2002
PSC Inc. (PSCX), a global provider of integrated data-collection solutions and services for the retail supply chain, today announced Pathmark Stores Inc., one of the leading U.S. supermarket chains, has selected PSC Magellan(R) 8500 scanners for its retail chain.
The "smart" scanners with SurroundScan(TM) 3D Scanning(TM) technology will be used in all Pathmark stores to maximize checkout speed and accuracy.
Pathmark is installing 2,150 Magellan 8500 "smart" scanners at the point-of-sale in all of its 144 stores. The retailer has also purchased 565 PSC Duet scanners for use at its customer service, deli and pharmacy counters. Rollout will be completed by November 2002.
The Magellan 8500 is the highest performing fixed point-of-sale scanner in the world and also has the most aggressive scan pattern in the industry. It quickly reads bar codes on all six sides of an item using PSC patented SurroundScan 3D Scanning technology. Because checkers no longer need to stop to find the bar code, it significantly improves checkout speed and ergonomics. Intelligent decoding software integrated with the scanner allows reading of poor quality and truncated labels. The "next-generation" Magellan 8500 also provides checker training, as well as bad label and productivity reporting. Additionally, a PSC patented All-Weighs(TM) scale platter incorporated in the Magellan 8500 holds produce in any direction providing more accurate weighing, dramatically reducing produce shrinkage.
"Selection of our scanners by one of the largest U.S. Supermarket chains is a great compliment and underscores our leadership in fixed position scanners," said Edward Borey, President and CEO of PSC Inc. "The surround scan technology and intelligent software of Magellan 8500 scanner will not only take the Pathmark customer shopping experience to the next level, but will offer faster return on investment.
"Pathmark is pleased to complete an agreement for PSC Magellan scanners, which will significantly improve our front-end technology," said Bob Schoening, Chief Information Officer for Pathmark. "After evaluating several options, we are convinced that the PSC Magellan system will give our stores superior performance and reduce the potential for lost sales."
