Nokia Connection 2002

HELSINKI, Finland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 2002

Demonstrating Complementary Multimedia

Services for a Converging World.

At the Nokia Connection 2002 show in Singapore today, Nokia, a world leader in mobile and broadband communications, and Orca Interactive, a global market leader in developing applications for interactive TV, will use Orca's iTV application software to demonstrate streamed video services over Nokia broadband access and intelligent edge infrastructure. Demonstration participants will be able to see video services delivered to TV, PCs and the Nokia 9210i Communicator.

Nokia will demonstrate the cost-efficient delivery and dynamic bandwidth management necessary for full video-on-demand services via the Nokia D500 multiservice access platform and the Nokia ASR 2020 intelligent edge router. The service solution demonstrates how video content can be multicasted through the operator network, allowing multiple video streams to be delivered to end-user terminal devices such as TVs and PCs.

Using Orca application software, users of the Nokia 9210i Communicator will be able to view a series of movie trailers and choose the movie they would like to order via their video-on-demand service. The application will demonstrate how operators and service providers could offer multimedia services that take full advantage of both mobile and fixed broadband networks. End-users of the service will be able view movie trailers and then select a movie while on the move, requesting the movie of their choice to be delivered over the broadband fixed network at a particular time when they would be at home to view.

"It is important to demonstrate potential real life opportunities for creating increased revenue per user and to show how operators could offer converged services and take advantage of both mobile and broadband network investments," comments Mark Slater, VP Marketing & Sales, Nokia Broadband Systems. "By working with companies like Orca Interactive, and using Nokia's mobile and broadband solutions, Nokia is well positioned to offer solutions for converged services to all operators, both fixed and mobile."

"We are very pleased to be working on this demonstration with Nokia as we believe the combination of our application software solutions and Nokia's leadership in mobile and broadband networks, makes for a compelling offer to all operators wishing to increase revenues through converged service packages," Comments Yosi Glick, Vice President of Business Development, Orca Interactive.

Notes to editors

The Nokia D500 Multiservice Access Platform is media-enabled by design. It brings the advantages of multiservice capability through a highly scalable, high-capacity, and flexible platform that supports both today's services as well as meeting future service needs. The D500 can be deployed either in an ATM-based network, a hybrid ATM/IP-based network or be used in an IP based network and is able to support both the network and the service evolution from ATM to IP and from high speed Internet to full-service voice, video and data.

The industry's first aggregation service router with "five nines" reliability, the Nokia ASR 2020 is a multiservice edge router that enables DSL aggregation with subscriber management capabilities in a single high-performance routing device for smooth, efficient migration to All-IP networks. The ASR 2020 offers aggregation of ATM, Frame Relay and IP services in a highly compact, scalable unit suited to central offices and small Points of Presence (PoPs). The ATM access and IP routing capability will also enable DSL service providers to deploy bandwidth-intensive applications such as Video on Demand.
