MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 24, 2002
The United Kingdom is gearing up for the one of the biggest weeks for interactive television ever.
Beginning today, millions of Britons will have the opportunity to enjoy a plethora of interactive programming powered by OpenTV (Nasdaq:OPTV)(Euronext Amsterdam:OPTV), the world's leading interactive television company.
The UK leads the world in the penetration of interactive television. Approximately 40 percent of the population today enjoys interactivity via satellite, cable and terrestrial broadcasts. OpenTV technology powers the most popular platform, the 5.9 million interactive set-top boxes that make up the BSkyB digital satellite network.
Over the course of the next seven days, these viewers will be able to enjoy an unprecedented array of enhanced and interactive programming. Highlights include:
World Cup soccer -- the British Broadcasting Corporation is
offering viewers the ability to select different camera
angles, audio commentary, match statistics, and review replays
and highlights of the matches. It also has 24x7 access during
the entire tournament to highlights of previous matches,
interviews with players and the latest statistics. Around the
world, approximately 20 million viewers in a dozen countries
are expected to access World Cup soccer applications enabled
by OpenTV.
Wimbledon tennis tournament -- The BBC is offering satellite
viewers a choice of four extra matches in addition to the game
that is being broadcast on the network's main television
channel. Viewers can also select alternative commentaries and
a comprehensive text service providing news and all the
scores.
Big Brother -- Satellite viewers of Britain's most popular
reality game show can choose from four different video feeds:
two streaming live footage and another two featuring
highlights of the action. Viewers can also vote for their
favorite contestants, enter quizzes, play a Big
Brother-branded game and place bets on the outcome.
International cricket -- Sky Sports Extra is taking viewers
closer to the action for the first three games of the One-Day
International Cricket series between England, Pakistan and Sri
Lanka. Each game features a choice of camera angles,
highlights, scoreboard and ball-by-ball statistics.
Additionally, digital satellite television in the UK offers: two 24x7 interactive news channels, Sky News and BBC News 24; Viacom's MTV Hits channel, which allows viewers to create their own playlist; and PlayJam, the world's largest interactive television gaming channel, which is available to more than 27 million viewers worldwide.
"We believe that this single week in the UK demonstrates that viewers have a real appetite for compelling and innovative interactive television content," said James Ackerman, chief executive officer of OpenTV. "OpenTV's worldwide base of more than 25 million iTV-enabled households provides broadcast network operators with the ability to offer some of the most advanced interactive TV experiences to their customers."
