ROUSSET, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 2002

Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML), announced today that Zhuhai Eastcom Peace Smart Card Co. Ltd has selected the Atmel's secure smart card ICs as source for the development and deployment of the CDMA USIM card for the Chinese market.

Eastcom Peace has already experienced success on the Chinese GSM market using the AT90SC product family. The AT90SC product family is based on an AVR(R) high-performance 8-bit secure microcontroller using enhanced RISC architecture. They are highly secure, low power consumption products compliant with mobile phone (2, 2.5 and 3G) specifications.

Atmel is the world's first IC vendor to bring flash memory technology to smart card applications and it is the best choice when flexibility and time to market are crucial on a new market such as the USIM card for CDMA.

"The combination of Atmel's dense non-volatile memory technology with the high-performance AVR 8-bit RISC microcontroller offers a very cost-effective solution for our development. Use of flash technology provides us with greater flexibility to satisfy our end users' changing requirements. It also helps us to reduce the development risk while accelerating time to market. It is recognized as an easy progression from flash to mask ROM thanks to the code compatibility of the AT90SC family," said Mr. Huang Xiao-peng, R& D Director of Eastcom Peace.

Benoit Makowka, Atmel's Marketing Manager for mobile phone smart card ICs, stated, "Atmel has put a lot of effort into proposing products that fit exactly with the SIM and USIM markets in terms of flexibility, performance, security and price. With several successes already on GSM and UMTS markets in Asia, we are very proud to be selected by Eastcom Peace for the Chinese CDMA market."
