ATLANTA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 2002

NEC Eluminant Technologies, Inc. (eLUMINANT(R)), a major optical access solutions provider to the world's leading carriers, announces FiberSLAM(TM) 1000, its fiber-to-the-business passive optical network system (PON).

FiberSLAM 1000, which includes the capability of delivering economical Ethernet services to customer locations, will be demonstrated at SUPERCOMM 2002 June 4-6 in NEC Booth #24230.

"This delivery marks an important milestone for eLUMINANT," said David Montanaro, CEO and chairman of eLUMINANT. "Our strategy has been to leverage our strong reputation in providing today's access products into the new marketplace for all-optical access solutions, including PON-based fiber-to-the-business (FTTB), fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and the emerging marketplace for high speed Ethernet connections. With investments in last-mile broadband on the rise and regulatory issues being resolved, it is perfect timing for eLUMINANT."

FiberSLAM 1000 provides a clear path to move beyond DSL and into an all-optical access network. This FTTB solution supports 10/100 Base-T Ethernet, DS1 delivery and migration to triple play FTTH services.

Each FiberSLAM 1000 optical line terminal can support up to 256 locations via eight single fiber PON links. Each PON link can be optically split to service up to 32 customer premise sites.

"Because FiberSLAM is a drop-in alternative to a DSLAM, much of the network infrastructure required to support this new access technology already exists," said Jim Holley, senior vice president, marketing. "Fiber-based PON presents a unique opportunity for carriers to leverage the investment that has gone into their DSL rollout, establish their position for future Ethernet services and separate themselves from the competition. An added plus is that PON operation costs are substantially lower because the system eliminates active loop electronics, powering or monitoring equipment in the distribution network."

eLUMINANT was spun off from NEC America, Inc. in 1998 to develop products that address the strong demand for high-speed broadband communications worldwide. Leveraging years of experience in supplying last-mile access systems to the world's leading carriers, eLUMINANT has generated a high level of interest from the investment community as it develops new optical networking solutions such as FiberSLAM.

The company has recently announced $31 million in funding to support its business plans and research and development activities to achieve high growth in broadband deployment of access products.

eLUMINANT is exploring several broadband alternatives in wireless, Ethernet, copper and other forward-looking technologies at its headquarters in Chantilly, Virginia and the research and development center based in Portland, Oregon.
