Trend Micro Defends 22,000 Fairfax County Public School Staff and 400 Servers from Viruses and Malicious Code

(Nasdaq:TMIC) (TSE:4704), a worldwide leader in network antivirus and Internet content security solutions, today announced that the Fairfax County Public School system, the 12th largest in the United States, has deployed Trend Micro(TM) ServerProtect(TM) and Trend Micro ScanMail(TM) for Microsoft(TM) Exchange 2000 to prevent virus outbreaks throughout its computer network.

Seven months into the 2001-2002 academic year, Fairfax County officials credit the Trend Micro solutions with stopping more than 30,000 virus-infected messages.

The Fairfax County Public School system is located in northern Virginia with more than 165,000 students in 204 schools, and an operating budget of $1.6 billion. With 22,000 employees, the school system is also the largest employer in Virginia. Fairfax County schools rely heavily on computers for instruction and staff communications. Teachers' computers are often hooked up to a VCR and large television monitor, and are used for classroom presentations. Teachers also use computers to surf the Web to support classwork.

The network infrastructure includes 400 servers that support Internet access, email, and administrative support. Previously, the servers were running different security products and many servers were attacked by viruses. In September, 2001, when the Nimda worm began its worldwide epidemic, the Fairfax County schools IT department selected Trend Micro ServerProtect to ensure consistent protection on all instructional and school-based servers.

ServerProtect provides comprehensive antivirus scanning throughout the network for file servers running Windows(TM) 2000, Windows NT(TM) and Novell NetWare(TM). Managed through a Web-based or Windows-based console, ServerProtect provides centralized virus scanning, pattern updates, event reporting and antivirus configuration. Fairfax County schools IT staff reports that deployment across the 400 servers was straightforward, and maintaining ServerProtect has been easy.

When the school system began implementing a 20-server Microsoft Exchange environment, Fairfax County schools chose Trend Micro ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 on the email servers because it was ready to go immediately after testing and installation. ScanMail is a highly scalable, multi-threaded antivirus solution that enables complete and uniform security policies across an enterprise.
