"As a leading vendor for legacy application extension products and solutions, Attachmate will provide the WS-I organization with in-depth knowledge of the interoperability issues associated with host access," said Larry Schuiski, Attachmate senior vice president, products and support. "Attachmate's participation in the WS-I will help establish the means for customers to use the technologies of the Internet to better leverage their existing legacy assets."
WS-I brings together a diverse community of Web services leaders, such as Attachmate, to respond to customer needs with solutions based on common, accepted definitions and related XML standards support. The community of WS-I members includes software vendors of all sizes, enterprise customers, and many others interested in Web services. Attachmate will join other member organizations as a participant in workgroups to expand standardization efforts.
In the next few years, analysts expect Web services to gain in popularity as a more efficient way to build software. Web services technology allows businesses with different computing systems to more easily interact and conduct transactions.
But analysts and technology buyers warn that Web services won't catch on industry wide unless there is a widely accepted way of including existing legacy systems. "The legacy applications of the back office have traditionally not been able to fully participate in client-server integration technologies. Web Services technology provides the means to bring those two worlds together," continued Schuiski. "Attachmate will be a leader in integrating legacy applications with the new technologies and standards associated with Web services."
