ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002
Targus Inc., the leader in essential accessories for mobile computing, today announced the development of a new security system for IBM ThinkPad(R) notebook users.
The DEFCON PC Card Fingerprint Authenticator by Targus comes in a PC card format and features a retractable fingerprint sensor that authenticates designated users. By replacing easily penetrable passwords with biometric technology, the DEFCON PC Card Fingerprint Authenticator helps prevent unauthorized parties from logging on and accessing sensitive company and personal information.
Targus' DEFCON PC Card Fingerprint Authenticator is compatible with IBM's Embedded Security Subsystem. Authorized ThinkPad(R) users can utilize the PC fingerprint sensor to retrieve protected files and folders stored through the subsystem's security mechanism. The Targus product is compatible with IBM's Client Security Software 3.0 which provides support for various security tools that manage access to the PC.
"As a leader in portable computing, Targus is committed to developing leading-edge technologies to address the evolving needs of mobile consumers," said Brett Johnson, President of Targus Inc. "We are proud to deliver superior biometric security protection for digital content to ThinkPad(R) notebook users."
The innovative Targus product features TruePrint(TM) technology by leading biometric semiconductor developer, AuthenTec. TruePrint(TM) is a patented subsurface technology that senses and verifies the "live" or second layer of skin, where true fingerprints begin. This unique subsurface capability eliminates recognition failures relating to common issues such as soiled, moist or dry fingers that often defeat surface-based fingerprint technologies.
Priced at $199.99, the Targus DEFCON PC Card Fingerprint Authenticator will soon be available online through www.targus.com, www.port.com and will be for sale at major PC and electronic retailers nationwide.
