A Single Source for Wireless Needs -- GoAmerica Aggregates Wi-Fi
Networks to Add High-Speed "Hot Spot" Access for Corporate Customers
GoAmerica, Inc. (NASDAQ: GOAM) a leading provider of wireless data solutions, today announced it will expand its offering to include high-speed wireless local area network (LAN) access in public venues. GoAmerica plans to leverage its expertise in providing secure, wireless wide area network (WAN) solutions for the corporation, to offer an aggregated Wi-Fi solution as well. GoAmerica expects to offer the first, virtual, combined WAN/LAN network. Service will be available during the second half of 2002.
GoAmerica plans to aggregate existing high-speed networks and launch with Wi-Fi service in more than 1500 U.S. locations. A LAN supplies high-speed connectivity to a group of computers in close proximity, allowing any person with a wireless LAN card to benefit from high-speed wireless connectivity within a 300-foot radius of the network base. Currently, LAN service is based on 802.11b technology, known as Wi-Fi, and boasts speeds up to 11 megabytes per second (an average of 10 times faster than the a T1 land-line office connection). Wi-Fi access has quickly gained popularity in heavily trafficked areas - known as "hot spots," such as airports, hotels, conference centers and coffee shops, where businesspeople often stop to connect to the office.
"Offering Wi-Fi access represents both a logical next step and a tremendous opportunity for GoAmerica," said Aaron Dobrinsky, GoAmerica chief executive officer. "We have been watching the Wi-Fi build-out with great interest and our customers and partners have expressed a growing need for a combined solution. GoAmerica has earned respect for providing unmatched flexibility in WAN access by aggregating all major wide-area wireless data networks. We look forward to leveraging our existing infrastructure to offer the same seamless integration in LAN solutions. This furthers our commitment to provide customers with a single source for fast, secure and cost effective solutions for all wireless data needs."
"By supplementing its existing wide-area network with Wi-Fi access, GoAmerica can be a single source for the wireless data needs of the corporation," said Roberta Wiggins, director, Wireless Mobile Services, the Yankee Group. "And when combined with their OnPrem, behind the firewall offering, GoAmerica can provide corporate customers with advanced control and end-to-end data encryption."
Through its WAN/LAN network, GoAmerica plans to provide a comprehensive offering of secure wireless solutions for corporate customers, allowing mobile professionals to benefit from a virtual nation-wide coverage footprint including both WAN and LAN access. By acting as a single point of access for multiple services and providing one source for billing, software, hardware and customer support, GoAmerica aims to simplify wireless initiatives for the enterprise. When combined with OnPremsm, GoAmerica's behind-the-firewall solution, important data is protected by end-to-end security and advanced corporate control.
