NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002
Vindigo for BREW Application Allows Subscribers to Find the Best
Places to Eat, Shop and Play in Major Cities; Provides Real-Time
Access to Maps and Walking/Driving Directions
Vindigo, the leading developer of personal navigation applications for mobile devices, today announced a version of its award-winning consumer service for QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)) platform.
Vindigo for BREW has the same look and feel as the company's popular PDA-based application while taking advantage of wireless connectivity for real-time updates and unlimited access to Vindigo content. In conjunction with this announcement, Vindigo today also announced the first major upgrade to its service, Vindigo 2.0.
Vindigo for BREW has all the core features that have made Vindigo successful on other platforms: comprehensive local information on where to eat, shop and play in over 20 major metropolitan areas, complete with full-color maps, ratings and reviews from brand-name content providers, and - for the first time with BREW-based services - driving directions to any Vindigo listing.
"We founded Vindigo in anticipation of wireless phones as powerful and compelling as those running on the BREW platform," said Jason Devitt, chief executive officer of Vindigo. "Today, over 500,000 consumers rely on Vindigo to find what they need, wherever they are, and the BREW platform finally allows us to deliver a user experience for wireless phones that is similar to that of PDAs."
"Location-based services are in high demand among wireless consumers and Vindigo's application clearly delivers on the promise of useful wireless content," said Gina Lombardi, senior vice president of marketing and product management for QUALCOMM Internet Services.
"With Vindigo on BREW-enabled phones, consumers on the go can find everything they need, in more than 20 major cities."
QUALCOMM's BREW platform is a thin application execution environment that provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The BREW platform is part of a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW SDK(TM) (Software Development Kit) for developers, the BREW applications platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that is controlled and managed by carriers enabling them to easily get applications from developers to market and coordinate the billing and payment process. Carriers' BREW-based services will enable consumers to customize their handsets by downloading applications over the air from a carrier's application download server. The BREW platform is a product of QUALCOMM Internet Services (QIS), a division within the QUALCOMM Wireless & Internet (QWI) Group of QUALCOMM Incorporated.
