REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 2002

Software and Smart Devices combine to Create Attractive

Wireless Data Services for Wireless Carriers

Action Engine today announces that Carrier Devices Ltd. (CDL) has licensed Action Engine's next-generation wireless software, the Action Engine Mobile Services Framework(TM), and will integrate it into smart wireless devices distributed by CDL to their wireless carrier partners in markets around the world.

This includes the recently debuted Joey device, an integrated GPRS phone and handheld PDA. CDL devices are designed to use Microsoft's Pocket PC OS exclusively.

Action Engine's software, called the Action Engine Mobile Services Framework, is comprised of a client / server software system that enables applications and services to take advantage of the capabilities of smart wireless devices - without the need for a constant Internet connection, resulting in an improved user experience.

"CDL believes Action Engine's software is the most flexible and adaptive framework in the market, and allows us to offer our customers the ability to build very useful applications for a truly mobile lifestyle," said Jim Morrison, CDL senior vice president and head of technology.

Other features of the framework include wireless provisioning of applications to the client device, simple integration with existing billing systems, and a straightforward application development environment that makes the Action Engine solution compelling for wireless carriers looking to launch next-generation data services.

"CDL is perhaps the first of a new breed of device companies that provide the full end-to-end services required by carriers for next-generation devices. Our software takes full advantage of a smart device's powerful computing capabilities that are coming from CDL, while working around limitations in the carriers' networks," says Action Engine CEO Craig Eisler. "And because it's compatible with all the major operating systems, our individual licensees can offer much broader usability to their customers from both a consumer and enterprise perspective."

CDL has also licensed Action Engine's suite of "Action Utilities," enabling carriers to allow their users to wirelessly download new applications and wireless services, backup and restore device data, and lock or destroy data if the device is lost or stolen - all from a wireless state. Action Engine and CDL worked together very closely to develop these services.

Carrier Devices will also distribute Action Engine's SDK (Software Development Kit) to carrier customers for application development by third parties, including application development communities, enterprise licensees and systems integrators. The SDK is available direct from Action Engine as well.
