MARLBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 25, 2002
Fully managed service provides the next step in business continuity --
Off-site data protection over a secure Internet connection
LiveVault Corporation(R), the leading provider of fully managed online backup and recovery services, today launched a new IP-based Virtual Backup & Recovery Network(TM) (VBN) that provides for assured protection of customer server data. With the need for business continuity planning at an all-time high, the LiveVault VBN utilizes a range of technologies to securely and reliably transport data over the Internet to an off-site vault at an Iron Mountain facility, enabling organizations to protect and quickly restore their critical information. Targeted at small- and medium-sized businesses, and the remote offices of large corporations, the LiveVault fully managed service is available through the company's re-seller relationships with Iron Mountain(R) (NYSE: IRM), the leader in off-site data storage and protection, Compaq(R) (NYSE:CPQ) and others.
Tape-based Backup Does Not Restore Effectively
According to a recent InformationWeek Research survey of business continuity plans, nearly 40 percent of those companies polled said it would take days or longer to bring records back online if disaster wiped out their main data storage. More than a quarter of the respondents had to use their disaster recovery plan in the preceding 12 months.
"The dirty little secret in the storage industry is that traditional tape-based server backup does not work well for small- to mid-tier businesses. Backup is tedious and error-prone, and doing it right is almost impossible," said Bob Cramer, president and CEO of LiveVault. "LiveVault's VBN enables us to eliminate the burden of doing backup for our customers, and ensures that their data is protected against hardware failure, application corruption, human error or any other kind of data loss."
"A big part of protecting data is the ability to securely transmit it to a remote location," said Dan Heather, president of Network Control Group, a LiveVault re-seller that specializes in the development of Virtual Private Networks. "For our customers, security of their data is a primary concern, and the LiveVault VBN enables us to provide critical data protection in a totally secure environment."
Data Protection for the Rest of Us
Major corporations with large data centers dedicate significant resources to backing up data and then moving it off-site. However, for businesses with servers outside of major data centers (such as small- and medium-sized businesses, and remote offices of large corporations) tape-based backup is cumbersome and error-prone. LiveVault's fully managed service reliably backs up data for these organizations, and automatically stores the data in a remote location, where it is safe from disaster and can be easily recovered. LiveVault eliminates the burden of tape-based procedures so companies can focus on their core competencies while knowing that their information is protected at all times.
"Data is the lifeblood of our business," said Deb Goldstein, president of IDG List Services, a full service list management and brokerage business unit of International Data Group, specializing in high tech and business-to-business direct marketing. "By enabling us to securely transport our data to an insulated, off-site Iron Mountain vault, LiveVault gives us the peace of mind that our most precious resource is secure, protected and easily recovered."
"Iron Mountain is the most trusted name in off-site data protection and our customers are increasingly in need of electronic vaulting services," said Richard Reese, Iron Mountain Chairman and CEO. "By partnering with LiveVault, we enable our valued customers to continuously secure their electronic data off-site where it can be quickly recovered, providing assurance that their business is protected."
VBN Provides Security, Efficiency, Reliability
The LiveVault VBN features the following technologies to deliver reliable, secure transport of data to Iron Mountain electronic vaults:
-- Firewall security compatibility; -- Connection resiliency to deliver ongoing data protection; -- AES advanced data encryption; -- Digital certificates and signatures; bi-directional
authentication;
-- Optimized data compression for maximum bandwidth efficiency;
