JEM-CE(TM) SDK Provides Previously Unavailable Java Plug-in
and Standalone Application Support Needed for
Web Interactivity and a Runtime 6-12 Times Faster
BSQUARE Corporation (Nasdaq:BSQR) today announced April availability of its JEM-CE(TM) (Java Embedded Machines for Windows CE) Software Development Kit (SDK) for Microsoft Windows CE.Net devices based on the X86 processor.
The JEM-CE Windows CE.Net X86 SDK features a Sun-certified Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that is the first available to provide Java runtime support on embedded devices running Windows CE.Net. BSQUARE's latest Java solution, compatible with Sun's 1.2 Personal Java, enables critical Java Plug-in and standalone application support previously unavailable to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original device manufacturers (ODMs) developing CE.Net based embedded devices.
According to a May 2001 report by VDC, the total number of smart devices shipping with Java worldwide will reach 98.7M in 2005. As the number of Web sites using Java applets to enable interactivity continues to increase, support for Java on Internet capable embedded devices becomes a critical development requirement. BSQUARE's JEM-CE SDK addresses this requirement by providing the first available Java runtime support for Internet Explorer (IE4) plug-ins, as well as JVMs for standalone Java applications on CE.Net embedded devices.
BSQUARE's JEM-CE Windows CE.Net X86 SDK
BSQUARE's JEM-CE X86 SDK includes a Sun-certified JVM compatible with Sun's 1.2 Personal Java to ensure consistent and reliable operation while mitigating customers' development risk. Powered by Insignia Solution's(TM) Jeode technology, the JEM-CE X86 SDK provides fast operation for embedded devices -- 6 to 12 times faster than traditional Java interpreters. Included configuration and monitoring tools enable OEMs and ODMs to customize JVM operation for the best compromise of performance and footprint on devices such as PDAs, interactive TV pads, telematics devices, tethered enterprise terminals and mobile industrial devices.
"The promise of `write once run anywhere' has made Java a popular development language and runtime environment, but has been problematic for embedded devices because of system constraints like limited processor speed and small memory capacity," said Brian Deutsch, vice president and general manager of BSQUARE's Device Solutions. "BSQUARE's JEM-CE X86 SDK solves these problems and exemplifies our ongoing commitment to provide OEMs, ODMs and developers the products and services they need to streamline the development process."
BSQUARE's JEM-CE SDK Product Families
BSQUARE's JEM-CE Windows CE.Net X86 SDK is the latest in a series of JEM-CE SDK product families the company plans to release throughout 2002. JEM-CE for Windows CE 3.0 X86 is already available. BSQUARE plans to release JEM-CE SDKs for Pocket PC2002 on ARM and the Intel(R) XScale(TM) microarchitecture, Windows CE 3.0 on ARM, and Windows CE.Net for ARM and the Intel(R) XScale(TM) microarchitecture in Q2 and Q3 2002.
Each JEM-CE SDK product family contains a comprehensive set of products to meet the varying needs of Windows CE device manufacturers and application developers. These range from a no-cost time-limited evaluation product, to lower-cost "right-to-use" JVM products for application developers, to complete SDKs with JVMs, class libraries and configuration and monitoring tools for device manufacturers.
BSQUARE's Java Solutions Family
The JEM-CE Windows CE.Net X86 SDK is the latest offering in a growing portfolio of Java solutions that make up BSQUARE's Java Solutions Family. In addition to the JEM-CE SDK products, the company also offers the following Java solutions for optimized Windows CE device development: JVM Support Programs, Sun-certification and Device Testing, Personal Java Licensing, Porting JVMs to Custom Platforms, and Developing Custom Java Applets/Applications.
Pricing and Availability
BSQUARE's JEM-CE for Windows CE.Net X86 SDK will be available in early April. JEM-CE product prices range from $1500 to $11,500 USD. For more information please contact BSQUARE sales at sales@bsquare.com or call 888-820-4500 for more information.
