On2 Alters Licensing Terms for VP3; Company Responds to Open Source Community Demands

On2 Technologies Inc., The Duck Corporation (AMEX: ONT), the industry leader in compression technology, today announced they have altered the licensing terms required to download the source code for their freely available VP3 video compression technology.

VP3, the world's best free-license codec, became available to the open source community in September 2001 and has had over 14,000 developers register for the source code. This recent-generation technology is now available under the Gnu Lesser General Public License (the Library GPL).

"Future versions of VP3 will be released under the LGPL," said Dan Miller, Founder and CTO of On2 Technologies. "This decision was made to further our goals of supporting the open-source community as fully as possible, and to encourage increased adoption, contribution, and distribution of the technology. In addition, we will be re-working the VP3 site and BBS software in conjunction with our next VP3 release."
