LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 5, 2002
Agreement Leverages Cable & Wireless' Investment in Global IP-based
Infrastructure and Web Hosting Services
Cable & Wireless (LSE:CW; NYSE:CWP), the global telecommunications group, today announced it has signed an agreement with Inktomi Corp. to provide a global connectivity and web hosting solution to support Inktomi(R) Web Search.
The new agreement is part of a significant expansion of Inktomi's relationship, which began with Exodus, and delivers hosting services for Inktomi Web Search within three data centers in London, San Jose, California, and Reston, Virginia, allowing Inktomi to access strategic elements of Cable & Wireless' global network.
More than 300 million web searches are conducted on a daily basis worldwide. Cable & Wireless' network reliability and scalability are central to ensuring that Inktomi continues to meet the demand for global access to Internet content. Inktomi delivers hosted search services on an OEM, private-label basis to the leading web portals worldwide.
With Inktomi Web Search, large portals can deliver cost-effective, highly accurate Internet search results by leveraging Inktomi's search technology expertise and the robust infrastructure needed to handle heavy query volume.
"Our goal is to provide our customers with fast, reliable access to the most sophisticated web search technology available," said Vishal Makhijani, general manager of Inktomi Web Search. "By leveraging the web hosting services and global network that Cable & Wireless offers, we can continue to consistently provide our customers with the highest quality web search without adding to our costs."
"The Inktomi contract is a clear demonstration of Cable & Wireless' ability to deliver innovative solutions to the world's leading Internet technology vendors. When combined with the recent acquisitions of Digital Island and Exodus, this announcement reinforces Cable & Wireless' central role in providing complete solutions that bring together connectivity and services," said Paul Mavris, head of Content, Application and Internet Providers, Cable & Wireless.
The contract with Inktomi is also further evidence of the benefits Cable & Wireless' recent network upgrades can bring to new and existing customers.
Cable & Wireless is currently upgrading its global IP network to OC-192 using MPLS, which gives Cable & Wireless' customers access to greater network performance for bandwidth-intensive applications including broadband digital content distribution.
The high-speed connections support the unique network performance and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of large-scale network infrastructure providers, such as Inktomi as well as providing sufficient scale to keep Cable & Wireless ahead of increasing demand for IP Services.
