Axis Communications, a global leader in the network video market, launched today the AXIS 250S MPEG-2 Video Server, the first Axis video server based on MPEG-2 compression.
The AXIS 250S is the next generation in surveillance technology that meets the increasing demand for high-performance surveillance applications. The video server enhances security and surveillance applications by delivering DVD-quality video and synchronized CD-quality audio to professional security users connected anywhere on the Local Area Network (LAN).
The AXIS 250S allows companies with the highest video and audio demands in security and surveillance applications to view, transfer and store streaming video. The MPEG-2 video server digitizes the video feeds from analog closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras for distribution over a LAN or even the Internet, giving the appropriate people access to high-quality security video from any network-attached PC.
"High-resolution video is essential for security and surveillance applications," said Michael Engstrom, general manager for Axis Communications. "With the AXIS 250S, users can view DVD-quality video without worrying about bandwidth constraints."
By using MPEG-2 video compression, the AXIS 250S enables high-resolution video transfer over just one-third the bandwidth used by MJPEG (Motion JPEG) of the same resolution. This makes the AXIS 250S ideal for large security installations in facilities such as banks, airports and retail stores. It is particularly suited for professional security applications that require users to follow a flow of events, rather than just single images.
The AXIS 250S contains a built-in compression chip, Web server and operating system, allowing it to operate independently of other computer equipment or software. In addition, it contains special features such as the ability to trigger external alarms, remote video storage to FTP servers, pre-alarm buffering, and e-mail notification.
The AXIS 250S will be available via Axis' standard distribution channels during the third quarter of 2002.
