SANTA CLARA, Calif. & WAYNE, PA.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 2002

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) and SunGard (NYSE:SDS) announced today a global strategic alliance to provide secure, reliable, and open information availability and transaction processing services.

As part of this alliance, Sun will promote SunGard's information availability services to its customers and the two companies will jointly market SunGard financial solutions based on Sun infrastructure.

As part of their information availability offering, SunGard has achieved certification under the SunTone(SM) Certification and Branding Program for Services. With the first disaster recovery service offering to be SunTone Certified, SunGard Availability Services is setting the standard for reliability, availability and service. Additionally, SunGard is working with Sun's Business Continuance Architecture Group to jointly define a new SunTone(tm) Certification and Branding category for hot site and mobile business continuity, and is expected be the first company to achieve this status.

Through the alliance, Sun and SunGard will collaborate on the engineering, marketing, and selling of targeted product offerings to provide enhanced financial solutions for Sun customers requiring operational resilience.

Additionally, the SunGard Transaction Network (STN), a SunGard strategic initiative for achieving straight-through processing in the financial services industry, will support the Sun(tm) Open Network Environment (Sun ONE) architecture, Sun's standards-based software vision, architecture, platform, and expertise for building and deploying Services on Demand. STN connects the processes in the financial services value chain, electronically linking asset managers with brokers, brokers with exchanges, exchanges with banks, and banks with settlement agents to enable straight-through processing.

Currently, Sun provides the infrastructure for many key SunGard applications, delivered via an application service provider (ASP) model as well as through a license model. SunGard applications are used by 47 of the world's 50 largest financial services companies. Two new workflow/productivity solutions for securities processing, SunGard StreamBridge and StreamEvents, are available today on the Sun ONE platform on an application service provider (ASP) basis.

"Sun and SunGard have long provided scalable, proven and open infrastructure and services to our joint customers, who are the bellwethers in the financial services and business continuity industries," said Doug Kaewert, vice president, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Our goal in this alliance is to provide the best infrastructure to enable SunGard and our customers to adapt quickly to changing market conditions and deploy quality applications, while ensuring interoperability among all environments. With SunGard as a key strategic alliance partner, its endorsement of our Sun ONE architecture is a natural next step in our long term relationship."

"More people need more access to more information more quickly than ever before. With approximately 70 percent of Nasdaq trades and $15 trillion of investment assets managed daily on SunGard's systems, it is critical that we provide secure, resilient, continuous transaction processing," said Robert Greifeld, executive vice president, SunGard. "With our new status as one of Sun Microsystems' leading strategic alliance partners, we will work together to further simplify the exchange of financial information between market participants while providing resilient high-availability infrastructure for business continuity."
