D.H. Brown Associates, Inc. (www.dhbrown.com) has released its 2002 UNIX Function Review, a detailed technical assessment of the functional capabilities of four leading UNIX operating systems.
The study employed 165 technical criteria to rank the systems across five major functional areas: Scalability; Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS); System Management; Internet and Web Application Services; and Directory and Security Services. The evaluated systems were Compaq's Tru64 UNIX 5.1, Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX 11i, IBM's AIX 5L 5.1, and Sun Microsystems' Solaris 8.
This year's evaluation shows that UNIX system functions are rapidly progressing in several key areas, including server partitioning and workload management tools, next-generation Internet protocols, and integrated network directory and security functions.
"As organizations adapt their IT operations to web-based infrastructures, matching the correct platform with their applications requirements rises in importance," said Tony Iams, D.H. Brown Associates, Inc.'s Vice President of System Software Research. "This study shows that the functional strength of UNIX operating environments remains a significant differentiator in terms of their suitability for critical workloads."
Since 1989, all of the major systems software vendors have relied on DHBA's evaluations of operating system features and functional capabilities as independent verification for their internal competitive assessment. An executive summary of the 72-page "2002 UNIX Function Review" can be downloaded from www.dhbrown.com.
