SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 2002

eBay, The World's Online Marketplace(TM), has joined with Guernsey's auction house for the sale of Tiger and Wolf, two of late Grateful Dead lead singer Jerry Garcia's most-played and beloved guitars. The guitars will be the featured items in an auction of rare and personal Garcia and Grateful Dead items, taking place on May 8 at Studio 54 in New York City as well as on eBay Live Auctions. Bids can currently be placed and the items can be viewed at www.ebay.com/garciaauction.

With eBay's Live Auction technology, bids can be placed online in real time from anywhere around the world. Live Auctions was developed by eBay to allow online bidders to participate in the excitement of a traditional auction by transmitting online bids from a user's home or office computer to the bidding floor of an auction house.

Willed to their maker Doug Irwin by Jerry Garcia, who passed away in 1995, Tiger and Wolf were two highly exclusive and limited group of guitars that Garcia played throughout his 30-year career. He and his followers often called the instruments by name, and many fans say they can discern which guitar is being played on the recordings. Named for the exquisite mother-of-pearl and ivory inlaid animal images Irwin created on their bodies, the guitars were commissioned personally by Garcia after he visited the craftsman's California shop.

In addition to the guitars, there will be an extraordinary array of rare Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead effects at the May sale, including original paintings by Garcia; original drafts of Grateful Dead lyrics; extremely rare concert posters, even rarer proof sheets and the original artwork for many posters. The auction will also offer full collections of unpublished photographs, including work by Roberto Robanne, as well as Robert Cohn, known for his joyous, candid images of the Dead in concert. Garcia's personal leather jacket, his own backstage passes, his original drawings for Dead t-shirts, and one of his Harley Davidson motorcycles will all be available for purchase at this unprecedented event.

In addition to one-of-a-kind, celebrity-owned pieces like the Garcia guitars, eBay offers equipment and instruments for musicians of all levels. Musical instruments is one of eBay's most vibrant categories. In fact, a musical instrument sells on eBay every 30 seconds. At any given moment, more than 50,000 related items are available on the site -- nearly 20,000 of which are guitars.

Details and instructions on placing bids using eBay Live Auctions are available directly at www.ebayliveauctions.com. Bidders must first sign up for each live auction online as a registered eBay user, and accept the auction house's bidder approval requirements. Before placing bids using Live Auctions, users can browse the catalogues on the site. Users can place bids before and during the sale. Once received, these bids are sent to the salesroom during the traditional auction.
