COMDEX Fall 2002

ADVISORY...for Wednesday (Nov. 20)

--(BUSINESS WIRE)

IEEE Spectrum:

WHAT: People may love electronic gadgets, but how about all those tiny
buttons to push and cryptic functions to memorize? Indeed, the
bewildering complexity of the devices that surround us-- at home,
at the office, in our cars-- is fast becoming a consumer
nightmare, hence the drive toward voice control. By embedding
speech-recognition technology within cell phones, PDAs, TV sets,
and automotive electronics, companies like Philips, IBM, Sensory,
Fonix, Voice Signal and Advanced Recognition Technologies aim to
vastly simplify how we interact with our machines, allowing
"hands-free, eyes-free" operation. Just speak the command-- "VCR,
record the news at 6 p.m."-- and the device will do the rest. Jean
Kumagai, IEEE Spectrum senior associate editor, will explore
speech recognition technology, joined by a panel consisting of the
    following experts in the field:

-- Jordan Cohen, CTO, Voice Signal Technologies, Inc.

-- Todd Mozer, CEO, Sensory Inc.

-- Michael Weinhoffer, Director, Sales & Marketing, Embedded
        Speech Group, Phillips Speech Processing

WHEN: Wednesday, November 20, 1:00 p.m. - 2:15 p.m.

WHERE: COMDEX Fall 2002, Las Vegas Convention Center, North 252

DETAILS: IEEE Spectrum is producing "Crystal Ball: Technology
Infusions," a five panel-track part of the business technology
conference at COMDEX Fall 2002. Each panel focuses on one of five
emerging technologies that are likely to have a significant impact
on the IT industry within the next three to five years. In
addition to the speech recognition technology, technologies to be
explored are organic electronics, gallium nitride, the semantic
    Web and autonomic computing.

IEEE Spectrum is a top science and technology magazine whose core
strength is its ability to round up top industry professionals to
provide informed, expert commentary on the most important science
and technology concerns of our time in each issue. The magazine
serves as a source of information on trends in science and
technology for everyone from the computer programmer, to the CEO
    to the average consumer.

INTERVIEWS: Immediately following each panel, IEEE Spectrum editors
and panelists will be available for interviews and Q&A at the
    Media/Analyst Facility, Central Hall 2 (C2 Entrance) - Room B. To
view product prototypes and obtain additional information about
each emerging technology, visit IEEE Spectrum Booth # 7958.
