The EMC Data Center for Information Imaging will provide facilities for BWH scientists to conduct cutting-edge research through the use of state-of-the-art information technology, radiographic, and cardiographic tools. This technology will allow physicians to practice evidence-based medicine in real-time and at the point of care to reduce medical errors associated with inappropriate use of imaging resources. Additionally, the Center will provide BWH with electronic capabilities to improve efficiency of storage, access and management of patient health records incorporating genomic and proteomic data, which will allow BWH to leverage clinical knowledge whenever and wherever it's needed. EMC will utilize the Center to develop best practices in medical imaging and to better understand requirements to develop future technologies.
"To deliver the best possible medicine, hospitals need to be on the cutting edge of technology," said Matt Van Vranken, chief operating officer and executive vice president, BWH. "This collaboration with EMC not only helps us to advance technologically, but also will enable us to continually provide the highest level of quality patient care."
EMC CLARiiON(R) enterprise storage systems and software will support the Center, offering superior performance, reliability and manageability. The Center will also implement EMC Centera(TM) content addressed storage (CAS) systems and software, enabling huge repositories of clinical information to be shared on-line between clinicians while helping the hospital meet regulatory and business requirements for redundancy and security.
"Digital health imaging information is growing exponentially due to the accelerated adoption of digital modalities and the requirements to deliver these images across the enterprise," said Mark Lewis, EMC's executive vice president of new ventures and chief technology officer. "To help BWH capitalize on this information explosion, EMC has teamed with the hospital to leverage storage for real-time medicine while enhancing the quality of patient care and reducing medical errors. Together, we will work towards a fully digital environment."
In addition to the Center, BWH has standardized on EMC CLARiiON enterprise storage systems and software infrastructure for its Multi-Disciplinary Picture Archiving and Communication System (MD-PACS), now the largest in the country generating more than 2 terabytes of image information per month from over 120 state-of-the-art image acquisition devices in radiology, cardiology, and other image generating disciplines. EMC MirrorView(TM) remote replication software is currently being installed for business continuity at another site on campus. BWH utilizes EMC Navisphere(TM) Manager software to simplify data management and improve information availability.
BWH is a 716-bed nonprofit teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and a founding member of Partners HealthCare System, an integrated health care delivery network. Internationally recognized as a leading academic health care institution, BWH is committed to excellence in patient care, medical research, and the training and education of health care professionals. The hospital's preeminence in all aspects of clinical care is coupled with its strength in medical research. A leading recipient of research grants from the National Institutes of Health, BWH conducts internationally acclaimed clinical, basic and epidemiological studies.
