NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 2002

Atherotech, Inc., a leading cardiodiagnostic company and specialty reference laboratory, today announced that it will present at the Salomon Smith Barney Health Care Conference Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at 2 p.m. EST. The presentation will be made by Roseanne Varner, Atherotech's president and chief executive officer. The Salomon Smith Barney Health Care Conference runs Oct. 28-30 at The Plaza hotel in New York.

Varner will provide an overview of the company and market and discuss the importance and growing acceptance in the medical community of the company's VAP(TM) (Vertical Auto Profile) Cholesterol Test, which detects twice the number of patients at risk for heart disease than the routine cholesterol test. The VAP Test complies with updated National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) guidelines, which call for improved patient identification and more aggressive treatment of heart disease.

According to Varner, the invitation to this year's conference is an honor for Atherotech and reflects the company's increasing presence in the cholesterol testing market and the emergence of the VAP Test as the new standard of care in cholesterol risk assessment. "Atherotech has experienced enormous growth over the past two years. Our participation in this year's conference demonstrates recognition of the importance of the VAP Test in the early diagnosis and treatment of heart disease -- our nation's No. 1 killer."

Birmingham, Ala.-based Atherotech is dedicated to improving the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases that kill nearly 1 million Americans each year. The VAP Test provides direct, detailed measurements of cholesterol, or lipid, subclasses that play important roles in the development of heart disease but are not measured by routine cholesterol tests, allowing physicians to improve risk detection and develop patient-specific treatment plans.
