TROY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 29, 2002

Six months after the groundbreaking of a new 53,000 square foot Price Chopper supermarket, doors were opened at 9 a.m. today to the community in what was a move to inject new life into what was once a popular shopping center in the Collar City.

The new Price Chopper serving as an anchor store is expected to reverse years of steady decline that had taken hold of Hudson Valley Plaza ever since the closing of Bradlees department store in 1996. The older and smaller Price Chopper located at the opposite end of the plaza closed its doors Saturday at 6 p.m.

"Price Chopper is again proud to lead the way in helping to revitalize another of the Capital Region's once vibrant and vital shopping plazas," said Neil Golub, CEO and President of Price Chopper.

The new Price Chopper will fuel a vast redevelopment and reconfiguration of Hudson Valley Plaza, which opened in 1983. The store is built flush with the remaining stores, which will improve the parking field, parking ratio and flow of traffic in the plaza.

"Price Chopper is a premier anchor tenant, and their wonderful new store will breathe new life into Hudson Valley Plaza," said Mike Goman, President and Chief Operating Officer of Konover & Associates, Inc., owner and developer of Hudson Valley Plaza. "It has been a pleasure working with Price Chopper as we share the same goal of adding value to the communities where we do business," added Goman.

This state-of-the-art facility will employ as many as 300 full and part-time associates and offer expanded meat, bagel, cheese, and floral sections. It also houses a food court where shoppers will be able to choose from roasted chicken, turkey breast, wings, baby back ribs, salads, pizzas, and specialty sandwiches.

A variety of international cheeses will include gourmet cheeses from local to European dairies, while the seafood department will put a smile to any fresh seafood lover's watering mouth, featuring fresh shellfish, filets, steaks, lobsters, and even sushi.

Price Chopper's bakery will be hopping as specially trained chefs prepare pies, pastries, custom cakes, donuts, rolls, a multitude of bagel varieties, plus mountains of European crusty breads and much more.

Price Chopper has given their floral departments a new name, Central Market Florist. It's a name that carries on the tradition of quality and value of our original Central Markets. Shoppers will find flowers for all occasions that are imported daily from all over the world. Price Chopper is the Northeast's second largest retailer of FTD services. Orders can be placed by calling 1 877-712-ROSE or at http://www.pricechopper.com. Appointments can be made with an experienced certified professional florist at the store for free wedding consultations.

Lewis Golub, Chairman of the Board of Price Chopper stated, "We certainly hope Price Chopper will help further fuel the rebirth of an important center of commerce here in Troy and add a new level of convenience for residents."

The family-owned and operated supermarket chain's parent company, The Golub Corporation, was founded in 1932. Widely known for its strong level of community involvement, it's based in Schenectady, NY, and currently operates 102 stores in six northeastern states, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Price Chopper employs more than 20,000 associates, who own 55 percent of the stock.
