WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 2002

Sockeye Networks(TM) effectively neutralized the impact of yesterday's major WorldCom/UUNet Internet outages for its customers using multiple Internet service providers, Sockeye said today.

Fourteen enterprises and service providers that deploy the Sockeye Networks GlobalRoute(SM) service also utilize UUNet as one of their upstream transits. During yesterday's outage, performance across UUNet to some destinations spiked severely from 50 milliseconds to over 700 milliseconds, with packet loss at times reaching 100 percent. Sockeye's GlobalRoute service avoided these problems by instantly detecting the performance hit and routing traffic to better performing Internet pipes - with no need for network operator intervention.

Network and data storage service provider ORIGIX uses the Sockeye Networks GlobalRoute service as the route optimization component of its new O-NAP (Optimized Network Access Point) high-speed, high-capacity Internet service deployed in Minneapolis and Dallas.

"Thanks to GlobalRoute the UUNet outage had no impact on our customers," said Ramesh Ajitaprasad, chief technology officer of ORIGIX. "The Sockeye Networks GlobalRoute service recognized the UUNet problems and instantly routed traffic onto our better-performing alternate transits."

Sockeye's GlobalRoute service proactively optimizes IP connectivity for enterprises and service providers multihomed to the Internet. Sockeye sells GlobalRoute as a service consisting of a customer-controlled network appliance that combines extensive edge traffic measurement and analysis with a unique global view of Internet performance. GlobalRoute greatly improves application performance, reduces bandwidth costs and increases visibility for network managers.

"The UUNet meltdown is a severe example of problems that occur on the Internet every day," said Brendan Hannigan, vice president of marketing of Sockeye Networks. "The Sockeye Networks GlobalRoute service keeps our customers' networks running smoothly by ensuring optimal performance and minimizing exposure to these congestion events."
