New Longview Fibre Company CEO; Richard H. Wollenberg Elected Chief Executive Officer

LONGVIEW, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 2002

Richard H. "Rick" Wollenberg was elected Chief Executive Officer of Longview Fibre Company (NYSE:LFB), effective November 1 (start of company's fiscal year), at the corporate board of directors September 13 meeting.

He continues as President of Longview Fibre. The board expressed their appreciation for 24 years of company leadership as chief executive officer to Richard P. Wollenberg, who is resigning as CEO but will continue as Chairman of the Board.

Rick Wollenberg, 49, has been president and chief operating officer of Longview Fibre for the past year, with responsibilities for all company operations including manufacturing, sales, timberlands and administrative functions. Longview Fibre operates one of the largest pulp-paper mills in the world at Longview, Washington; 17 container and bag plants in 12 states; a lumber mill; and owns more than 570,000 acres of timberlands managed for sustained-yield in the Pacific Northwest. He continues to serve on the company board of directors and is based at corporate headquarters in Longview.

The third-generation Wollenberg to be chief executive officer of Longview Fibre Company which recognizes its 75th Anniversary this fall, Rick Wollenberg follows his father Richard P. Wollenberg and his grandfather Harry L. Wollenberg who was the firm's first CEO.

Rick Wollenberg joined Longview Fibre in 1988 as assistant general counsel after working ten years in Alaska in private law practice. He was appointed production manager for the Western Container Division in 1993, and advanced to Division senior vice president-production in 1994 overseeing seven container plants in Washington, California, Idaho and Utah. In 2000 Rick Wollenberg was promoted to executive vice president of Longview Fibre with primary responsibilities involving management of all container and bag manufacturing and sales, and he became president and chief operating officer October 1, 2001.

Among Rick Wollenberg's paper industry activities are membership in TAPPI, and he has served on the Fibre Box Association corporate-counsel committee. He is a member of the Washington, Alaska, Oregon, and American Bar Associations. He currently serves on the Reed College, Portland, Ore., board of trustees, and on the boards of the World Forestry Center and Oregon Museum of Science & Industry. Rick Wollenberg has a B.A. degree in philosophy from Reed College and a Juris Doctor degree from Willamette University, Salem, Ore.

RICHARD P. WOLLENBERG, BOARD CHAIRMAN

Richard P. Wollenberg, 87, was elected chief executive officer of Longview Fibre in 1978, has been chairman of the board since 1985, and has 63 years of company service. He was president of Longview Fibre from 1969 to 2001, and has been a director of the company since 1946.

He went to work for Longview Fibre in 1939 as a safety engineer, and advanced through a series of positions: assistant chief engineer, chief engineer, manager container operations, vice president operations and executive vice president before being elected president.

His industry leadership includes serving on the boards of three national organizations -- American Forest & Paper Association, the National Association of Manufacturers, and currently is on the Institute of Paper Science & Technology. He was president of Pacific Coast Association of Pulp & Paper Manufacturers for nine years and served on the executive committee.

Education has been a prime interest of R. P. Wollenberg, who chaired the Washington State Council for Postsecondary Education for several years, is a trustee of Reed College (since 1962) and chaired Reed's board 1982-1990, and was a long-time chairman of the Washington Roundtable's education committee.

In 2000, R. P. Wollenberg was selected for the World Forestry Center's Memorial Chest honors with a special Living Memorial ceremonial event at the Center in Portland. He has been honored with the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration's Alumni-Achievement Award, and he has received an Honorary Doctor of Public Affairs from the University of Puget Sound.
