DECATUR, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 2002

DeVry University in Georgia announced today the fourth annual presentation of its Young Women in Science and Technology program.

The workshop, sponsored by AT&T, the Metro Atlanta and DeKalb Chambers of Commerce and TechLINKS Magazine, is designed to encourage young women to seek career opportunities in fields relating to science and technology. This program will take place Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., which has been officially proclaimed by the state of Georgia as "Young Women in Science and Technology Day." The location is DeVry's Decatur campus, located at 250 N. Arcadia Ave., just off DeKalb Industrial Way.

Combining a series of hands-on workshops with presentations by influential female members of the community, the program reinforces young women's interest in science and technology while emphasizing the impact of technology on almost every industry. Sophomores, juniors and seniors and educators representing high schools around the state will be invited to participate.

This year's event has attracted an impressive list of female speakers who share an enthusiasm for career opportunities created by technology for Georgia's young women. Keynote presenter, Shirley Franklin, Mayor, City of Atlanta, encourages students to take advantage of Atlanta and the state of Georgia's position as a high-growth technology area.

"Georgia's female high school students have the advantage of leveraging one of the hottest spots for technology growth in the country," said Mayor Franklin. "Nearly every industry is affected by technology and young women who build their careers around this field open the door to an array of diverse opportunities."

Participants will hear from female leaders whose careers are touched by technology including: a pilot, a fire fighter, a corporate vice president, a business owner, an environmental engineer and a bank president. Other featured speakers include:

-- Rosita Smith - Director of Talent Development, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce

-- Dr. Donna M. Lorraine - President, DeVry University Georgia

-- Cynthia Good - Editor in Chief, Atlanta Woman Magazine

"Despite the past year's economic hardships, there are an unprecedented number of career opportunities for young women who choose to incorporate technology and science into their academic curricula," said Dr. Donna Lorraine, president, DeVry/Georgia. "Technology affects almost every industry in today's business environment. We hope to show these young women that an education grounded in science and technology will greatly enhance their vantage point as they head out into the workforce."

Welcoming remarks and a keynote speech will be followed by HerWorld(R), a short seminar explaining the "Top 10 Reasons Young Women Should Consider a Career in Technology," and a series of workshops organized into 11 specific career clusters including: agriculture and natural resources; business and administration; and information technology.

The program continues with afternoon activities during which participants can choose from hands-on workshops including: optics-electronics, web page production, and network and telecommunications.
