HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 2002
EMC Corporation today announced that National Semiconductor Corporation, a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits, is implementing 30 terabytes of EMC networked storage, open software and services to more aggressively pursue corporate goals of lower operational costs, IT consolidation and globalization. National chose EMC because EMC offered superior return on investment, the most advanced open software, and stronger support and services than competing solutions.
Ulrich Seif, National's Chief Information Officer, said, "In today's climate, return on investment is an important factor in any infrastructure purchase. When we looked at expanding our storage capacity, EMC emerged as the only solution that would generate a return on investment in less than one year. Consolidating our storage and servers with EMC is resulting in substantial savings. These savings and the benefit of advanced capabilities strongly affirm the value of our IT investments and clear the path toward adopting new technologies."
"Openness is the key to the future of storage," continued Seif. "EMC is leading the drive toward openness and interoperability through AutoIS. EMC is giving us more flexibility in choosing the most advanced components and removing the complexity a diverse environment brings. That's a huge competitive advantage because our strategy is to select the best technology platform for each application area. EMC makes information access completely transparent to our users so that none of the complexity shows up on their desktops."
National is implementing EMC ControlCenter, a major software component of EMC's AutoIS open software management strategy. EMC ControlCenter software is designed to automate storage management tasks such as displaying storage allocation, monitoring storage performance, provisioning new storage and reporting. National relies on the software to oversee its 34-terabyte EMC infrastructure, which manages information fueling applications running on IBM/FICON mainframes, Dell Windows NT servers, as well as Sun Solaris and IBM AIX servers.
"AutoIS takes us to the next level of automation in storage management," said Seif. "It eliminates human errors that disrupt information flow and enables our storage administrators to apply their expertise to progressive tasks that offer more value to the business. We are achieving the ideal balance between making sure we have enough storage and not buying more storage than we need. EMC software helps us more accurately measure and evaluate how we use our storage assets, shows how we can use them better and determines what additional assets we may need and when."
Based in Santa Clara, Calif., National Semiconductor has standardized its infrastructure on Symmetrix Enterprise Storage as the core of its storage area network (SAN) and on Celerra File Servers for network attached storage (NAS). National also relies on an EMC CLARiiON SAN to manage storage for a remote manufacturing location. National uses EMC software such as TimeFinder to improve storage management and availability.
Seif commented on the value of the relationship with EMC saying, "We have a truly reciprocal, productive relationship that has brought significant value to our business. We always feel that no matter what organization we're dealing with - sales, service or engineering - the people at EMC always have our best interests in mind."
"As National Semiconductor has so aptly observed, the demand for open storage management is growing rapidly," said Mark Lewis, EMC's Executive Vice President of New Ventures and Chief Technology Officer. "If companies cannot seamlessly link their information networks, productivity goes down, service to customers suffers and operational costs go up. EMC's networked storage and powerful open software solutions ensure that global businesses like National Semiconductor can communicate with their customers and partners cost efficiently and 24 hours a day."
