SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 14, 2003
NIST Okay Enables OEM Customers to Use NetOctave Products to
Develop FIPS-Certified VPN Systems for Government Markets
NetOctave, a leading manufacturer of security processors and accelerator boards for the SSL (secure sockets layer) and IPsec (Internet protocol security) markets and a division of CyberGuard Corporation (AMEX:CFW), today announced FIPS 140-2 (Federal Information Processing Standard) capabilities for its IPsec and SSL product lines.
FIPS 140-2 is a U.S. and Canadian government standard that describes security requirements for cryptographic hardware and software modules. A product or module must pass testing by a certified laboratory in order to earn joint certification by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Communications Security Establishment of the Government of Canada (CSE).
FIPS 140 certification is required to sell products implementing cryptography such as virtual private networks (VPNs) to the U.S. Federal and Canadian governments. In addition to government, FIPS certification is being required increasingly throughout the private sector - especially in the financial services and healthcare industries.
The core algorithms in NetOctave's NSP2000-SSL and NSP3000-IPsec product families are now certified by NIST. Certification of Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES), Secure Hash Standard (SHS) and Digital Signature Algorithm (DSA) algorithms make it possible for NetOctave's OEM customers to develop FIPS 140-2 compliant products.
"The NIST certifications demonstrate our longstanding commitment to standard conformity and strong security," stated Jim Kristof, general manager of the NetOctave division. "FIPS capability combined with on-chip random number generation and on-board secure key storage provides our OEM customers with the tools necessary to develop products that meet the most demanding security requirements."
In April 2002, NetOctave's parent company, CyberGuard Corporation, earned one of the first NIST validation certificates for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm that is part of its firewall/VPN appliances.
