MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 2003
Offerings will Enhance Marimba's Leading Inventory Management,
Application Packaging, and Reporting Capabilities for Mobile Devices
Marimba, Inc. (Nasdaq:MRBA), the Software Change-Management Company, today announced its next-generation Device Management offerings, which will provide enhanced software change management capabilities for mobile and handheld devices. By extending Marimba's inventory, packaging, and reporting capabilities to mobile devices, Marimba will help companies deploy ubiquitous software change management support across desktops, laptops, servers, and handheld devices throughout their distributed IT enterprise.
According to IDC, the value of worldwide shipments of smart handheld devices was more than $8.6 billion in 2002.(1) Gartner, Inc. forecasts that by 2007 more than 1.5 billion devices (excluding phone handsets) will have wireless LAN capabilities.(2) Industry analysts indicate that systems management activities will play an important role in this market's expansion, as current research suggests that managing devices can cost up to 50 percent more than managing servers or connected desktops. Marimba's Device Management solution will allow companies to deploy a single automated solution that makes it easy and cost effective to manage, update, and repair PDAs and handheld devices.
"The insurgent popularity and capacity of handheld devices has created an inherent need for IT administrators to take a second look at security and manageability," said Fred Broussard, senior research analyst, PC and Device Management Software for IDC. "Solutions that allow centralized management of software applications on handheld devices such as Marimba, provide enterprise IT administrators with needed solutions to control and secure handheld devices and the applications they contain."
"Handheld devices are playing an increasingly important role in the healthcare, financial services, and manufacturing industries," said Rich Wyckoff, president and CEO of Marimba. "We're enabling these and other industries to leverage leading-edge technology through mobile devices to increase quality of service, while reducing the cost of ownership. Our newest Device Management offerings will further extend our server and desktop capabilities to a wide variety of portable software devices, helping companies get more out of their PDA and handheld device investments."
Marimba's Device Management Offerings to Deliver Leading Software Change Management Capabilities to Mobile/Handheld Devices:
-- Inventory Management/Auto Discovery Capabilities detect which
devices are connected to desktops, servers or laptops. This
feature will leverage Marimba's enterprise inventory schemas,
helping reduce overhead, and making it easier for IT
administrators to identify altered or affected services. This
capability will help companies protect against viruses, which
can easily enter a network from a mobile device.
-- Application Packaging Capabilities leverage a variety of
installation venues, including Marimba's existing application
packager, Microsoft's ActiveSync and Palm's HotSync
technology. Marimba's Device Management offerings will help
organizations install, uninstall, verify, and repair
applications and content from PCs to devices. This capability
will enable the distribution of patches, and hot-fixes in a
secure manner that enhances user productivity while reducing
user downtime.
-- Reporting Capabilities provide a set of standard and
customizable reports that will detail network profiles, user
profiles, and device profiles that help IT administrators
understand which devices contain which applications. Marimba's
reporting capabilities will also include a series of update
confirmations that illustrate the status of successful or
incomplete software updates.
