AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 27, 2003

Helping digital entertainment manufacturers deliver more affordable, advanced audio features into consumer electronics products, Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS) today announced a new surround-sound codec, the CS42406. The CS42406 is ideally suited for audio/video and DVD receiver (combination DVD player/audio receiver) manufacturers searching for a cost-effective, surround-sound codec solution that delivers high-quality sound and bears the mark of audio excellence from Cirrus, the global leader in audio solutions (source: Forward Concepts, April 2003).

The CS42406, which features two analog-to-digital and six digital-to-analog channels, runs off 3 V to 5 V analog and digital power supplies. The analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) allow for simplified system design by providing single-ended inputs and outputs. Cirrus' CS42406 also features integrated level shifters that are designed to eliminate the need for external components in order to connect the codec with the system's host digital signal processor. In addition, Cirrus' patented Popguard(R) technology feature helps to simplify system design, reduce overall system costs and eliminate the "clicks and pops" often associated with the powering on and off of DACs with single-ended outputs.

"As a testament to our audio leadership and market drive, in the past year Cirrus has produced 22 new analog semiconductor solutions," said Jason Rhode, director of Analog Products Marketing, Cirrus Logic. "The CS42406, our latest analog solution, delivers a high-quality audio solution that will be attractive for A/V and DVD receiver design engineers due to its exceptional feature set and its ability to speed design cycles while reducing system costs."

The CS42406 offers 24-bit conversion, with the DAC providing 102 dB dynamic range and the ADC providing 105 dB. All channels of the DAC provide digital volume control and support 192 kHz sample rates, which will allow consumers to enjoy the improved dynamic range and multichannel capabilities of the DVD-Audio standard in devices that support DVD-Audio playback.

Pricing and Availability

The CS42406 is available in a 48-pin LQFP package and is currently sampling to customers. The CS42406 is priced at $2.62 in quantities of 10,000.
