Philips To Incorporate TV Guide On Screen(R), Gemstar-TV Guide's New
Digital IPG Technology, Into Recordable DVD and Television Product
Lines
Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. (NASDAQ: GMSTE) ("Gemstar-TV Guide" or the "Company") and Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHG, NYSE: PHG) announced today a worldwide multi-year licensing agreement for the incorporation of Gemstar-TV Guide's interactive program guide ("IPG") technology and service for the digital consumer electronics arena.
The agreement includes both the recordable DVD and television product lines in North America and Europe.
Under this agreement, Philips, one of the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturers and Europe's leading electronics brand, will launch its first products with the Company's IPG technology in mid 2003 in both North America and Europe. The European release of this new digital IPG technology marks the debut of the Company's IPG service in that market, beginning with the U.K., France, Germany and Spain. Philips plans to deploy the Gemstar-TV Guide IPG service into other European countries shortly thereafter.
Philips DVD recorders enable consumers to record their favorite TV programs as well as easily preserve their precious home video memories - on DVD. By using the DVD RW format, Philips DVD recorders provide consumers with the highest compatibility, ease of use and a high-capacity medium with up to eight hours of recording time, along with point-and-click retrieval of recorded programming for select models.
"I am thrilled that Gemstar-TV Guide has the opportunity to work with Philips, a truly world-class industry leader in digital technologies and flat TV," said Jeff Shell, CEO of Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. "We look forward to building a strong relationship with Philips so that together we can continue to bring ground-breaking products and technologies like TV Guide On Screen(R) to the marketplace."
Commenting on the agreement between Philips and Gemstar, Frans van Houten, Executive Vice President and General Manager Global Business Creation, Philips Consumer Electronics said: "Philips has a long tradition of applying innovative ease-of-use solutions - especially in its television and video products. The inclusion of TV Guide On Screen in selected products will both add significantly to that history, and to consumers' enjoyment of Philips devices."
The new TV Guide On Screen IPG is powered by the TV Guide(R) brand and is designed to bring a superior television viewing experience to consumers through easier navigation of channels, more comprehensive listings and enhanced program guidance information. TV Guide On Screen is a free guide service delivering a full eight days of program listings information. This new digital IPG features a brilliantly colored new graphic look and a new, more intuitive user interface. It includes new program sorting capabilities that allow viewers to quickly find shows they are interested in watching. TV Guide On Screen's one-touch recording and favorites features also let viewers easily schedule shows they want to record, or surf through only their favorite programs... all at the touch of a button. TV Guide On Screen is compatible with any digital platform, from digital cable and HDTV to plasma displays and DVD recorders and PVRs.
