SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 7, 2003

Last night, NBC 7/39's This Weekend's weathercaster Pat Brown joined Health Care Communicators of San Diego in honoring San Diego healthcare communicators for their work this past year on behalf of the local healthcare community.

Along with HCC Co-Presidents Bela Friedman and Don Stanziano, Brown recognized HCC "Finest Awards" winners at the organization's annual gala held Feb. 6 at The Prado Ballroom in Balboa Park.

"The selection process was tough this year," said Friedman, a public relations and marketing professional with the American Lung Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties. "We were blessed with a record number of entries. To remain impartial, we decided to ship the 87 entries -- which came in all shapes and sizes -- to our affiliate group, the Minnesota Strategy and Communications Network, for judging. It was quite a production, but having the opportunity to review all the wonderful work produced by our peers in San Diego made it all worthwhile."

"Outsiders think San Diego is just tourists, surfers, football fans," noted Stanziano, president of Stanzia Communications in San Diego. "But once you get to know this city, you're in awe of how much incredibly creative work goes on every day. San Diego is a very demanding environment to be a communicator. And the healthcare industry is particularly challenging ... just think, we deal with such issues as bioterrorism, work shortages, patient safety, on a daily basis. Healthcare is not a place where you can rest on your laurels for more than a nanosecond. So HCC really prides itself on being able to recognize these important contributions for at least one wonderful evening."

Respite from the serious business of healthcare communications came in the form of a "comic doctor bit" by San Diego actor Anthony Bollota, who entertained an audience of 150-plus healthcare professionals.

"This event would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors," noted 2003 Finest Awards Chair Lynne Fruehling, marketing communications manager at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. Sponsors included eHelp Corp., Eye/Comm Inc., Red Lizard Creative, Rush Press, The Corporate Basket, Time Warner Cable, AMN Healthcare Inc., PINT Inc., The San Diego Union-Tribune, American Specialty Health Plans, Express Press, Scripps Health and Sharp HealthCare.
