KANATA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 2003

Calian Technology Ltd. (TSX:CTY) today released unaudited results for the first quarter of its fiscal year 2003, ended December 31, 2002. Revenues for the quarter were $34.8 million, up 15% from $30.3 million for the same quarter in the previous year. Net earnings were $1.1 million or $0.13 per share, compared to $0.4 million or $0.04 per share in the same quarter last year. Cash position increased to $12.3 million.

"The first quarter earnings were in line with our internal projections and position us well for a strong 2003," said Larry O'Brien, Chief Executive Officer. " We can now build on this success in quarters two, three and four, and continue our sustained, managed growth."

Highlights of the First Quarter:

-- Systems Engineering involves planning, designing and implementing solutions that meet a customer's specific business and technical needs, primarily in the satellite communications sector.

-- Staffing and Outsourcing Services involves both short and long-term placements of personnel to augment customers' workforces (Staffing) as well as the long-term management of projects, facilities and customer business processes (Outsourcing).

"It was a solid quarter for Calian and the demand for our services continues to grow" said Larry O'Brien. Based on the improved profitability of the Company's first quarter 2003, we are increasing our previously disclosed guidance and we now expect to complete fiscal 2003 with earnings per share in the range of $0.52 to $0.55."
