AVON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 2003

A little bit of artistic flair and a lot duct tape have proven profitable for Margaret (Meg) Roberts and Tyler Mickley of West Point, Virginia. Roberts, 16, and Mickley, 17, attended the West Point High School prom decked out in formal duct tape duds and have each won a $2,500 college scholarship in the third annual Duck(R) brand duct tape Stuck at Prom(TM) Scholarship Contest.

The couple, clad in original prom attire made completely from duct tape, beat out 339 couples from 49 states and Canada. Alone, each outfit had its own red, black and yellow starburst effect. But, when standing next to each other, Roberts and Mickley's outfits fused together and created one very large starburst effect. Roberts designed her white gown with the left half of the starburst, while Mickley sported a red duct tape shirt, yellow vest and bowtie, and the right half of the starburst. The couple completed their look with Mickley's Elvis-style duct tape hair and Roberts' matching duct tape highlights and accessories. In all, it took the couple 50 hours and 540 feet of duct tape to construct the outfits.

Mickley's older brother, Josh, saw the contest last year when he was searching for scholarships online, and immediately told him about it. The couple remembered the contest this year and decided to enter. "Meg is really artsy and we brainstormed several ideas, but we really liked this design," said Mickley.

Mickley said reactions from students and teachers at the prom were consistent. "Everyone asked if it was really duct tape - most didn't know it came in so many colors," said Mickley. "We didn't expect to win the contest because there was so much competition and so many unique and colorful outfits," added Roberts.

In addition to Roberts and Mickley's scholarships, Henkel Consumer Adhesives, Inc., marketer of Duck(R) brand duct tape, awarded $2,500 to West Point High School for hosting the prom; $1,000 scholarships to second place winners Jessica Gustafson and Jeremiah McGuffey of Port Angeles High School in Port Angeles, Washington; and $500 scholarships to third place winners Ali Gilbertson and Travis Fischer of Slinger High School in Slinger, Wisconsin. In addition, several couples were named Honorable Mention Winners, including: Taylor Lee and Jason Anglen of Waxahachie High School in Waxahachie, Texas; Jessica Miller and Jonah Frazier of Richland High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania; and Nicole Nelson and Alex Sherbondy of Reed High School in Sparks, Nevada. These couples all received Duck brand Sportswear Packages.

"Each year, the duct tape formalwear gets more creative and elaborate," said Michelle Heffner, digital communications manager for Henkel Consumer Adhesives. "We're very impressed with the amount of skill and originality the students used in designing their outfits," Heffner said.

For added fun, Duck brand duct tape also "Double Duck Dared" Stuck at Prom participants to submit pictures of themselves completing some predetermined off-the-wall challenges in their duct tape prom wear. From posing with law enforcement officers to modeling their sticky duds with exotic animals and even serving fast food to customers through a drive-thru window, 14 couples made prom night even more fun with these interesting photo ops.

In addition, Duck brand duct tape named Peggy Hale of Monkton, Maryland, "Duck Tape Prom Mom of the Year." Hale was awarded a one-of-a-kind t-shirt, and an assortment of professional hair care products provided by Dep/LA Looks(R), valued at $200.
