MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 20, 2003
FedEx Corp. (NYSE:FDX) is putting the finishing touches on the transportation plan to deliver more than 250,000 copies of the highly anticipated new Harry Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," to Amazon.com customers across the United States tomorrow, June 21.
The nationwide distribution is expected to be the largest single-day, e-commerce event in history and will bring the new Harry Potter books directly to the homes of Amazon.com customers on the first day the book is available to the public.
The FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx Express networks will carry out this carefully orchestrated delivery event. The precise delivery plans include:
-- About 20,000 FedEx Home Delivery contractors and FedEx Express
couriers;
-- About 130 regularly scheduled FedEx Express flights;
-- Thousands of FedEx Express and FedEx Ground delivery vans and
tractor-trailers;
-- Special sort operations at FedEx Express and FedEx Ground
facilities following transportation of the books from five
Amazon.com distribution centers across the United States.
"Using the strength of the FedEx family of companies, FedEx will provide the transportation solutions Amazon.com needs to satisfy the unprecedented demand for delivery of the newest installment in the Harry Potter phenomenon," said T. Michael Glenn, executive vice president, market development and corporate communications for FedEx Corp. "This distribution is another example of how FedEx provides the utmost reliability, depth of solutions and technological capabilities to extend peace of mind to our customers."
FedEx and Amazon.com have worked closely to coordinate the just-in-time delivery cycle for this shipment, leveraging FedEx supply-chain expertise and pre-selecting transportation routes for optimum efficiency.
FedEx is transporting the orders from the five Amazon.com distribution centers to FedEx hubs and terminals throughout the country by tractor-trailer and through 130 regularly scheduled FedEx Express flights.
FedEx will conduct special sorts at each hub and automated sort facility of the Harry Potter shipments that will then be transported to local FedEx terminals for delivery beginning at 8 a.m. EDT on Saturday.
FedEx integrated its industry-leading tracking information directly through the Amazon.com Web site to provide a seamless experience for Amazon.com customers from order to delivery. FedEx representatives also provided support at each Amazon.com distribution center to help facilitate any automated-shipping and package-processing needs.
This collaboration marks the second time that FedEx and Amazon.com have joined for a special, one-day distribution event for Harry Potter. In July 2000, FedEx distributed 250,000 orders of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" directly to Amazon.com customers on the first day it was available to the public.
