Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leading provider of computer security solutions for more than 25 years, announced that one if its information security tools has been added to the computer procurement contract for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Through the addition of Harris STAT(R) Scanner to the federal government's Procurement of Computer Hardware and Software-2 (PCHS-2) contract, all VA facilities will now be able to purchase the product without having to go through a time-consuming bidding and procurement process.

STAT Scanner was added to the PCHS-2 contract through an agreement with Hewlett-Packard, one of four vendors that provides hardware, software, and security and wireless services to the VA under the PCHS-2 contract. The program was initiated to standardize IT hardware and software products throughout the VA, to simplify the procurement process, and to control costs.

"With this augmentation of the PCHS-2 contract, VA facilities around the nation now have the ability to quickly purchase a comprehensive vulnerability assessment product to protect their computer networks. This will help them address recent congressional concerns about IT security," said Lilo Newberry, director of operations for Harris STAT. "HP is one of the leading suppliers of IT products to the VA, and Harris is pleased to be aligned with them on this key government account."

Last year the General Accounting Office criticized federal agencies for a number of computer security lapses. A bill was introduced in the U.S. Senate that requires federal agencies to detect computer network vulnerabilities and develop a timeline for resolving them. The bill's author, Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, said he proposed the legislation because of his concern over the vulnerability of the federal government's computer networks to cyberterrorism.

Harris STAT(R) (Security Threat Avoidance Technology) provides vulnerability management and behavior-based intrusion prevention computer security products backed by decades of expertise in information security. These software solutions offer proactive protection of information and computer networks from hackers, viruses, and other threats.
