Acquisition of Journal Citation Report on the Web Gives Consortium Research Boost

Thomson ISI announced that the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS) Consortium has purchased Journal Citation Reports(R) on the Web (JCR Web(R)).

A component of ISI Web of Knowledge(SM), JCR(R) Web is the unique, multidisciplinary tool that can be used for a broad range of applications by a variety of information professionals. The statistical data in JCR Web provides a systematic and objective way to evaluate journals with the highest scholarly impact within 200 disciplines.

JCR Web is available in two editions--the Science Edition covers approximately 5,700 leading international science journals, while the Social Sciences Edition covers about 1,700 journals.

"One of the major roles of KERIS is to secure and provide educational content and core software programs to its members," said Hye Young Han, Information Service Team Manager, KERIS. "We are determined to build a nationwide knowledge and information service system to reinforce academic research capabilities that are the core of any knowledge-based society. The selection of JCR Web and ISI Web of Knowledge for 58 of our members will further enable us to achieve this important goal."

"JCR Web provides KERIS with a unique analytical tool to better serve their members," said Adam Klein, Vice President and General Manager, Asia-Pacific, Thomson Scientific. "We are pleased to be able to play a role in providing quality information and services via the ISI Web of Knowledge to the KERIS members."

About KERIS

KERIS was officially launched in April, 1999 with Dr. Seo Sam-Young named as the first president. KERIS took over the operation of the School Information Management System and the Student Record Program.

Their mission is to provide educational services, based on cutting-edge technology, foster highly trained human resources that will help carry out educational reform, manage the School Information Management System (SIMS) to ensure efficiency and transparency of educational administration, and provide education that is available to everyone anywhere, anytime.

About JCR Web

The Journal Citation Reports provides quantitative measures for ranking, evaluating, categorizing, and comparing journals. The impact factor is one of these. It is a metric that is useful in clarifying the significance of absolute citation frequencies. There have been many innovative applications of journal impact factors. One of the most common involves market research for publishers.

Many librarians use the statistics, including the impact factor, as tools for the management of library collections.
