WHAT: Teams of science students from eight Southern California
high schools race solar-powered boats they've built from scratch
at three-day Solar Splash competition sponsored by the
Metropolitan Water District of Southern California
WHEN: Media opportunity to see students test and fine-tune their boats
Friday, May 30 at 10:30 a.m. Formal events run from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. Saturday, May 31 through Sunday, June 1.
WHERE: Lake Skinner Recreation Area, 33740 Borel Road, Winchester

WHO: Friday kick-off program features Metropolitan Chairman Phillip J.
Pace, Hemet Mayor Lori VanArsdale, and Temecula Mayor Pro Tem
Mike Naggar, as well as student captains piloting boats in
formation. Sunday awards program at 1 p.m. with Ronald R.
Gastelum, Metropolitan chief executive officer; Riverside County
Supervisor Jim Venable; and MWD Director Helen Hansen of Long
Beach.
Student teams from Canyon High School, Anaheim; Moorpark High
School and Newbury Park Adventist Academy, Ventura County; Valley
View High School, Moreno Valley; Paloma Valley High School,
Menifee; Long Beach Polytechnic High School; Bonita High School,
La Verne; Centennial High School, Corona.
DETAILS: The three-day Solar Splash event is part of a national
program sponsored in Southern California by Metropolitan.
Solar Splash will help promote stewardship of resources and
alternative technologies in events, which include inspections
and qualifying at 11 a.m. Friday, 90-minute endurance races
at 10 a.m. Saturday, and sprints at 10 a.m. Sunday.
