Neglecting Vehicle Maintenance Dangerous for Drivers; A Safer Road to Tomorrow Encourages Regular Automotive Maintenance to Prevent Driving Hazards

Business Wire, April 22, 2004

CONCORD, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 2004

Close to 5,200 people are killed in car accidents each year caused by mechanical malfunctions that could have been prevented if regular maintenance checks and repairs were performed on vehicles.

A Safer Road to Tomorrow, a group of leading public and private safety, transportation, construction, law enforcement and business organizations in New Hampshire raising awareness about the importance of the state's roads, highways and bridges, says following maintenance schedules recommended by vehicle manufacturers is a key factor in keeping everyone safe on the roads.

"A vehicle that is well maintained is safer, more dependable and more economical to operate," said Chief Gregory Dodge, president of the New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police, a partner of A Safer Road to Tomorrow. "From the tires to the wipers, all parts play a role in keeping drivers in control and avoiding unnecessary hazards."

April marks National Car Care Month, a time when motorists are reminded to get their cars checked to avoid excessive operational and repair costs and ensure safer driving conditions. Often times, the least expensive and easiest things to check can prevent more expensive and serious malfunctions down the road. Topping your vehicle checklist should be monitoring tire pressure and tread, engine oil, coolant levels, engine belts, air filters and brake fluid.

Partners of A Safer Road to Tomorrow include: Associated General Contractors of NH, Business and Industry Association of NH, NH Association of Chiefs of Police, NH Lodging & Restaurant Association, and Safety & Health Council of NH. To learn more, visit www.SafeRoadsNH.com.
