SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 2004
Transmeta Corporation (Nasdaq:TMTA), the leader in efficient computing, today announced that its high performance, energy efficient Efficeon(TM) processor is now available in the HP Blade PC bc1000 as part of the HP Consolidated Client Infrastructure (CCI) architecture. Built on revolutionary and proven hardware/software architecture, the Efficeon processor is an intelligent, sensible alternative to competitive offerings. Efficeon offers freedom of choice for those seeking best-in-class chip set components and gives product vendors the ability to build in added value, functionality, security, comfort, reliability and cost savings.
"Transmeta's Efficeon processors provide HP Blade PC bc1000 users with an exceptional combination of the high performance they expect from the latest PC technology and energy efficiency to lower operational costs," said Arthur L. Swift, senior vice president of marketing for Transmeta. "The Efficeon processor is instrumental in enabling very high compute density for these innovative HP systems, in a market where performance per watt in a given unit of space is critical to customers."
The HP CCI solution virtualizes the desktop PC by moving computing resources to easily managed, highly secure blade PCs. Transmeta's Efficeon processor is an exceptional match for HP's CCI solution because the processor's energy efficient characteristics enable HP's blade PC to achieve very high compute density in a small form factor. The blade PC system contains up to 20 blades per enclosure and 14 enclosures per 42U rack, for a total of 280 blades per 42U rack.
In a market where air conditioning expenses for computer cooling and space considerations rival system costs, Transmeta's processor technology contributes to a reduction in total cost of ownership for end customers. The Efficeon processor balances energy efficiency with high performance to provide an exceptional end user experience for customers.
The industry-standard HP CCI solution consists of an access device -- an HP Compaq Thin Client with Transmeta's Crusoe(R) processor -- that connects through a secure log-in to the HP Blade PC bc1000 and network storage located in a centralized data center, consolidating computing and storage resources for better security and manageability while maintaining a high-quality, personalized desktop experience for end users.
"IDC believes that the introduction of new high-performance Blade PC solutions paired with thin clients represent an important new direction for the thin client market," said Bob O'Donnell, director, personal technology at IDC. "Not only can these new solutions address the performance concerns of the IT managers, they can ultimately reduce the total cost of ownership and increase the return on investment."
Although CCI allows access to server-based applications and is compatible with such implementations, it is unlike traditional server-based computing in that each user is dynamically allocated to a single bc1000 and its applications during each log-on session. The Blade PC bc1000 features a 1 GHz Transmeta Efficeon TM8000 processor, 40 gigabyte ultra ATA/100 hard drive and up to 1024 megabytes of double data rate SDRAM.
"The availability of the HP blade PC bc1000 rounds out the HP CCI solution, offering customers an adaptive computing model that dramatically maximizes IT value through reduced support costs and a simplified client environment that is easier to support, maintain and manage, while at the same time providing increased agility, security and user productivity," said Keith LeFebvre, vice president of business PCs, North America Personal Systems Group, HP. "Today, according to recent reports, companies may spend as much as $8,000(1) to maintain a traditional PC throughout its lifecycle; CCI can cut that IT spend in half for a large enterprise customer, and save up to $1,200 in support costs per user each year versus a traditional desktop PC."(2)

About the Transmeta Efficeon Processor
The Transmeta Efficeon processor is designed to provide power efficiency, design flexibility, performance-on-demand and low cost to meet the need of the next generation of mobile, wireless, and embedded devices. It includes three new high performance bus interfaces: an on-chip HyperTransport(TM) bus interface for increased input/output efficiency, an on-chip Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM memory interface for increased throughput, and an on-chip AGP graphics interface for high performance graphics solutions. These new interfaces allow Efficeon to achieve more work per clock, which results in greater energy efficiency and longer battery life for mobile computer users. The Transmeta Efficeon processor's dynamic LongRun(R) power management features and integrated architecture are designed to give system designers and marketers a wide range of choices in creating products that deliver added value, functionality, security, comfort, reliability, and cost savings to end users.
