Infonet MobileXpress Becomes First Network with More Than 12,000 Active Wi-Fi Hotspots
Business Wire, August 17, 2004
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Award-Winning Remote Access Service Expands Wi-Fi Footprint to More Than 50 Countries, Establishing New Industry Threshold
Infonet Services Corporation (NYSE:IN), a leading provider of global communications services for multinationals, today announced the immediate availability of more than 12,000 active wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) hotspots through its MobileXpress(TM) service.
With this major expansion of its Wi-Fi services, Infonet has exceeded its publicly stated plans to offer 10,000 active hotspots by the end of 2004, and now offers the world's largest Wi-Fi footprint to its multinational clients.
"Over the years, Infonet has provided us with excellent service and support for our mobile executives, and we are looking forward to taking advantage of the new speeds and broad coverage offered by MobileXpress," said Joe Graves, chief information officer of Stratus Technologies. "I personally look forward to being able to quickly synch my email at the airport. Infonet has proven to be a real leader in delivering wireless broadband."
Today, the Wi-Fi footprint includes business-oriented coverage in more than 120 airports and thousands of hotels, restaurants, and convention centers. In the near future, Infonet will also be expanding the reach of its wireless services to include those airlines serviced by the Connexion by Boeing(SM) real-time, high-speed Internet service.
"Enterprises are increasingly including Wi-Fi as a key high-speed access component for remote workers," said Keith Waryas, research manager, International Data Corp. "By leveraging its investments in companies such as Boingo and TOGEWAnet, Infonet has rapidly evolved its MobileXpress offering to best meet enterprise customers' Wi-Fi and remote access needs."
Using MobileXpress, enterprise end-users can use a wide range of mobile, switched, and broadband connectivity options in more than 120 countries, and are able to access either the public Internet or directly connect to Infonet's award-winning IP/MPLS network.
Other recent MobileXpress highlights include:
--Expanded Wi-Fi network coverage in Greece in support of customer requirements during the 2004 Summer Olympics. Infonet has provided communications services for Olympics-bound clients at every Olympics since the 1998 games in Seoul, Korea.
--Finalist status for two prestigious World Communication Awards in the categories of "Best Managed Service" and "Best New Service."
--The launch of Infonet-owned and operated hotspots in more than 20 countries.
"The pace of our service expansion underscores our commitment to our expanding enterprise customer base, and our ability to leverage our global organization and expertise," said Marc Patterson, vice president and general manager of Infonet's Mobility Services. "While the network reach is compelling, our focus on business-oriented venues and tight security integration has drawn the strongest interest from our clients."
Infonet's Wi-Fi footprint is based on the number of unique and active hotspots available to Infonet customers, and does not reflect hotspots which are "planned" or "under contract." Though a conservative practice, Infonet does not count numerous access points within the same venue as multiple hotspots.
Recently introducing its own hotspot coverage through its local operations, Infonet expects to double the MobileXpress wireless broadband coverage over the next year. "We are at an interesting evolutionary stage of mobility," concluded Marc Patterson. "Our demonstrated responsibility and attention to our clients will continue to fuel the innovation and flexibility of our solutions."
