NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 2004
J Records will release the sizzling soundtrack to the feature film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. The soundtrack will in-store February 17 with the movie's domestic release in theatres nationwide following on February 27. The disc is a joint venture between J Records and Lions Gate Films, the motion picture acquisition, production and distribution arm of Lions Gate Entertainment (AMEX and TSX: LGF).
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights re-imagines the 1987 phenomenon Dirty Dancing, but set in 1958 pre-revolution Cuba. Key tracks include Yerba Buena "Guajira (I Love U 2 Much)," Black Eyed Peas "Dirty Dancing," Santana (featuring Latin Grammy-winner Jorge Moreno) with "Satellite," (the Spanish language version, "Nave Especial" will be a bonus track), Orishas (featuring Tony-winner, Grammy-nominated Heather Headley) "Represent, Cuba," and Mya "Do You Only Wanna Dance," as well as songs from Christina Aguilera and Wyclef Jean. The film also contains musical cameos by Mya, Orishas and Heather Headley, as well as Shawn Kane covering the Sam Cooke classic, "You Send Me."
"We're delighted about partnering with J Records for what we believe is a fantastic soundtrack," says Tom Ortenberg, President of Lions Gate Films Releasing. "Everyone at the label completely understood the creative vision for the film and its music, and they sought out the best artists and songs to complement that vision. Every piece of music on the soundtrack captures the spirit of 1958 Havana, yet it also sounds totally fresh and contemporary."
Said Tom Corson, EVP, Worldwide Marketing and Sales, J Records, "Havana Nights takes its cue from the first Dirty Dancing by making the music an integral part of the film. Lions Gate was committed to capturing the feeling of the film and having that feeling translated to the soundtrack. We were lucky enough to get a wish list's worth of top artists to contribute their songs, thus giving the soundtrack a flavour that is both timely and timeless."
With songs ranging from up-tempo dance numbers to sultry love songs, the soundtrack for Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights is a hip, multidimensional collection in the vein of the original film's multi-platinum soundtrack, which was also produced and distributed by BMG through its RCA label. The Dirty Dancing soundtrack stands only second to Elvis as the biggest-selling album in RCA's history with worldwide sales of more than 32 million units since its 1987 release. Released in 1987, Dirty Dancing has posted over $170 million in theatrical grosses worldwide.
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights tells a timeless story of a young woman's discovery of love, sensuality and independence. Based on producer/choreographer JoAnn Jansen's real life experiences as an American teenager in Cuba, the movie stars acclaimed actor Diego Luna (Y Tu Mama Tambien), and, in what promises to be a breakout role, gifted young actress Romola Garai, who won raves for her performance in the independent hit I Capture the Castle. The resulting film promises to give audiences - from newcomers to those who cherish the first Dirty Dancing(R) - the time of their lives, and then some.
