LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 2, 2004

City Government Partnership Also Involves Departments of Public

Works, Recreation and Parks, Fire, and the Zoo

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers who bring their Christmas trees for recycling to any of 16 city-wide drop-off collection sites, will receive a free compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL).

The sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekends of January 3-4 and January 10-11, 2004.

The program is a City government effort in partnership with the Departments of Public Works, Recreation and Parks, the Los Angeles Zoo, the Fire Department, as well as LADWP.

"We are proud to provide these highly efficient light bulbs to our customers and to partner with other member departments of the City family. As customers enhance the environment by recycling their Christmas trees, the CFLs will help them use energy more efficiently and also save money. This project is an example of Mayor Jim Hahn's vision of Teamwork LA in action," said Lillian Kawasaki, LADWP assistant general manager for environmental affairs and economic development.

The compact fluorescent light bulbs that will be handed out one to a customer are a $5 value. CFL bulbs are four times more energy efficient than a comparable incandescent light bulb and last more than ten times longer. In addition, a CFL's cost of operation is one-fifth that of incandescents.

The CFL distribution project is part of the LADWP Energy Efficiency Program, one of the environmental Green LA Programs that also includes Recycling, Trees for a Green LA, and the Cool Schools tree-planting program. For more information on LADWP environmental programs log on to www.ladwp.com or customers may call 1-800-GreenLA.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the nation's largest municipally-owned utility, has served the residents and businesses of the city for more than 100 years.
